During campus power outages, information is sent to building coordinators via voicemail on the Meridian phone system, recorded on the hotline at 474-7UAF (7823), and posted online if the network is available. Report specific building issues to Facilities Services dispatch at 474-7000. Staff and faculty should call the hotline for general information and updates on outages. In addition, the UAF Police Department is using Nixle to provide campus safety information in real-time; sign up to have updates sent directly to your cell phone.
The UAF Police Department asks pedestrians and bike users (PDF) to follow the laws of the road and stay safe. Pedestrians should walk facing traffic and use sidewalks or stay as far off the roadway as possible. Bike riders should travel with traffic. Denis Wiesenburg, dean of the School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences, is leaving in June to become the vice president for research at the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, Miss. During his six years at UAF, Wiesenburg helped SFOS secure a $5 million grant from the Rasmuson Foundation for the UAF undergraduate fisheries program and funding from NSF for the $200-million Research Vessel Sikuliaq.
Jean Flanagan Carlo died April 8. Carlo was an assistant professor in the Art Department and worked with the Native Arts Center as a liaison between the center and Native elder artists. She organized the first Athabaskan Fiddlers Festival in 1982.

Julieann Pankey, CLA, recently signed a publishing contract with New Harbinger Press for her book titled Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) for Cognitively and Physically Disabled Individuals and Those with Related Conditions, to be released in June 2011.
Mary Goodwin, CLA, was invited to participate in a National Endowment for the Humanities summer institute, "Native Cultures of Western Alaska and the Pacific Northwest Coast," June 13 – July 12. Faculty for the institute include UAF emerita Aldona Jonaitis.
The UA Press recently published The Changing Arctic Landscape by Ken Tape. The book views changes in the arctic through decades-old photos paired with current photos of the same location.
The GeoCare Basket Auction to benefit the GeoCare Employee Assistance Endowment takes place May 6. Departments or individuals can donate a basket to be auctioned. The GeoCare employee assistance program provides funds for GI employees during times of need that are not covered by insurance. Alaska Sea Grant encourages Alaska aquaculture researchers to apply for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Sea Grant Office national research competition. Rural Student Services is hosting a celebration of honorary Ph.D. recipient Paul John and 40 years of student support and success Saturday, May 15, from 4 – 6 p.m. in the RSS Gathering Room in the Brooks Building.
