The UAF Police Department reminds students, staff and faculty to be aware of their surroundings and suspicious persons. All campus phones and pay phones have 911 access. Emergency phones are marked with blue lights. Call the department at 474-7721 any time to report a suspicious person or to have a community service officer escort you to your car or other Fairbanks campus location. Be prepared to show photo identification. To receive important text message updates directly from the police department, follow the department on Twitter.

Point Hope, Alaska: Life on the Frozen Water, a new book by author Berit Foote, was recently published by UA Press.

Alaska EPSCoR
was represented at the American Association for the Advancement of Science Arctic Division annual meeting in Juneau Sept. 14 – 16. The following students presented results of ongoing projects: Jessica Beecher, Ryan Cooper, Daniel Glass, Michael Golub, Tysen Hansen, Davin Holen, Amanda Robertson, Jenny Rohrs-Richey and Emilie Springer.




 

Events

A student health fair, hosted by the UAF Center for Health and Counseling, will take place Tuesday, Sept. 29, from 11:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. in Wood Center and Thursday, Oct. 1, 6 – 8 p.m. at the Moore-Bartlett-Skarland complex. For more information call 474-7043.

The UAF Graduate School presents "Academic Stimulus Package" by Jorge Cham, creator of Piled Higher and Deeper (PhD Comics), Wednesday, Sept. 30, at 7 p.m. in Schaible Auditorium.

Music at One, free recitals by UAF music students, take place throughout the semester on Thursdays from 1 – 2 p.m. in Davis Concert Hall. The next recital will be Thursday, Oct. 1. Admission is free. For more information call 474-7555.

ARSC provides free training for new and current users of high-performance computing resources Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:15 – 11:15 a.m. in 009 West Ridge Research Building. Topics include Introduction to Midnight (Sun Opteron Cluster) Oct. 1, Introduction to Pingo (Cray XT5 Cluster) Oct. 6 and Performance Programming Oct 8 – 13.

The Financial Aid Office presents Finan¢ial $ense, a series of workshops held each Thursday at 1 p.m. in 413 Gruening. The workshops are open to all faculty, staff, alumni and students. University Resources takes place Oct. 1 and Money Realities takes place Oct. 8. Workshops can also be scheduled for a group or to replace a canceled class. The UA Geography Program and the World Affairs Council present a free lecture, "Media Coverage of the Israel-Palestine Conflict, U.S. Foreign Policy Regarding the Middle East," by Alison Weir, founder of If Americans Knew, Thursday, Oct. 1, at 7 p.m. in Schaible Auditorium.

UAF HR is offering UAKJobs training including How to Create a Job Posting Thursday, Oct. 1, and UAKJobs Hiring Proposal Wednesday, Oct. 7. Both take place from 1:30 – 3 p.m. in the Rasmuson Library computer lab. Class size is limited and registration is required. For more information call 474-7700.

The IAB Life Sciences Seminar presents "Rethinking Zoonotic Disease at the Intersecton of Disease Ecology, Virology and Genetics" by Jonathan Runstadler, IAB and Department of Biology and Wildlife, Friday, Oct. 2, at 3:30 p.m. in 214 Elvey.

Outdoor Adventures offers trips and rental equipment to students, faculty, staff and alumni. Upcoming trips include the Delta Peak climb Oct. 3, a GPS hiking clinic Oct. 3 and a naturalist fall hike Oct. 4. For more information call 474-6027.

The 12th annual Farthest North Forest Sports Festival takes place Saturday, Oct. 3. The fun begins at 10 a.m. at the Fairbanks Experiment Farm field across from the Georgeson Botanical Garden, and moves to Ballaine Lake at 1 p.m. The festival is sponsored by SNRAS and the Resource Management Society. Chena Fest, a fundraiser for FFA (formerly known as Future Farmers of America) natural resources education, takes place Saturday, Oct. 3, at 6:30 p.m. at Chena Hot Springs Resort. The fest includes an all-Alaskan grown dinner and entertainment. Tickets are $25. FFA is sponsored by the UA Geography Program. For more information call 474-6916.

The UA Museum of the North is hosting the exhibit "The Last Polar Bear: Facing the Truth of a Warming World" through Saturday, Oct. 3. For more information call 474-7505.

Jamina Gerl, a graduate student in music, presents a piano recital, directed by Eduard Zilberkant, CLA, Wednesday, Oct. 7, at 8 p.m. in Davis Concert Hall. Admission is free. For more information call 474-7555.

Grants and Awards

Alaska Sea Grant's publication Marine Habitat Mapping Technology for Alaska was listed as one of the 2008 Best Notable Government Documents by the American Library Association.

Flint Hills Resources Refinery
renewed their support of UAF with a gift of $110,000. The funds will be used for the Athletic Department’s Nanook Fund; TVC; SOM's Visiting Faculty Program; CEM's E-Week, robotics competition, open house and scholarship support; and the Alaska Summer Research Academy.

Joe Usibelli Jr., president of Usibelli Coal Mine and UAF alumnus, presented Chancellor Rogers with a gift of $141,500 to support Honors, mining and geological engineering students.

UA Foundation employee Stephanie Strandberg and her husband, alumnus Roy Strandberg, created the Warren Brown Memorial Scholarship in memory of Stephanie's late brother. The scholarship will help students seeking a degree in music.




 

Mt. McKinley Bank renewed their sponsorship through 2011 of the Mt. McKinley Bank North Star Invitational women's basketball tournament. Mt. McKinley Bank has been the title sponsor since the tournament's inception in 2001. The 2009 tournament takes place Thursday, Nov. 26 – Saturday, Nov. 28.

Nanook volleyball
takes on Saint Martin's Thursday, Oct. 1, at 7 p.m. and Western Oregon Saturday, Oct. 3, at 3 p.m. Both games are in the Patty Center gym.

Nanook swimming's Blue vs. Gold match takes place Saturday, Oct. 3, at noon in the Patty Center pool.

Nanook hockey faces off with Southern Alberta Institute of Technology Saturday, Oct. 3, at 7 p.m. at the Carlson Center.

The Alaska Nanook athletic event scores from last week are: Home games – hockey, Blue vs. Gold, x-x. Away games – volleyball vs. Central Washington, 2-3, and vs. Western Washington, x-x.
