The University Police Department, in coordination with local police departments, plans to conduct two separate training exercises Wednesday – Friday, Nov. 11 – 13, on the UAF campus. The first two days of training will take place in Skarland Hall and the third day will be in the Butrovich Building. For more information e-mail semcgee@alaska.edu.
The Northwest Campus and the Reindeer Research Program now have a self-contained USDA-certified mobile slaughter lab to process reindeer meat. Heikki Muhonen, a world expert on reindeer, has joined the program as faculty and will teach in Nome for the next two years.

The UAF Chili Cook-off is back. Register your team by Sunday, Nov. 1 to participate. The cook-off is a fundraiser for United Way and takes place Thursday, Dec. 3, from 11:30 a.m. – 2 p.m. in Wood Center multilevel lounge.
The UA Geography Program hosted the University of the Arctic Institute for Applied Circumpolar Policy workshop Oct. 22 – 24. The workshop discussed policies for the future of the Arctic Ocean. UAF scientists and Chancellor Rogers participated in the event.
The UAF 2009 Employee Giving Program has launched. Last year more than 500 employees gave more than $250,000 to the Annual Giving Program. Please consider making a charitable gift to the scholarship, program or department you care most about.
SRC L.I.F.E. program (Word doc) fitness classes take place Oct. 26 – Dec. 11. Classes for fall 2009 (Word doc) include strength and tone, cardio kickboxing, circuit series, belly dancing, CORE strength and boot camp aerobics. L.I.F.E. membership fees are $230 annually or $86 per semester, additional fees apply for classes. Pete Brown, Aniak fire chief, died Oct. 13. Brown worked with CRCD for the last six years to train students as fire and rescue workers.

The UAF Journalism Department and Tanana Valley Television are hosting a live Fairbanks North Star Borough mayoral candidate debate Tuesday, Oct. 27, at 7 p.m. The debate will air commercial-free on KXD-CBS 13 in Fairbanks. The UAF Women's Studies Program presents a panel discussion, Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Anti-Gay Discourse, Tuesday, Oct. 27, from 1 – 2 p.m. in the Wood Center multilevel lounge.
Outdoor Adventures offers trips and rental equipment to students, faculty, staff and alumni. The Financial Aid Office presents Finan˘ial $ense, a series of workshops held each Thursday at 1 p.m. in 413 Gruening. The workshops are open to all faculty, staff, alumni and students. SAP and Other Financial Aid Rules takes place Oct. 29 and Writing a Scholarship Essay Nov. 5. Workshops can also be scheduled for a group or to replace a canceled class. ARSC provides free training for new and current users of high-performance computing resources Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:15 – 11:15 a.m. in 009 West Ridge Research Building. Wood Center is hosting the Weird and Creepy Family Halloween Bash for ages 12 and under with an adult, Saturday, Oct. 31, from 4 – 7 p.m. Join the fun with a haunted hallway, pumpkin bowling, piranha pit fishing, face painting, a bake sale and photos. The Fairbanks Symphony with guest Ilya Yakushev, directed by Eduard Zilberkant, presents a concert Sunday, Nov. 1, at 4 p.m. in Davis Concert Hall. Diane McEachern, CRCD Kuskokwim Campus, received the Western Region Social Worker of the Year award and the statewide NASW Social Worker of the Year award.
Jing Zhang and Sukumar Bandopadhyay, both CEM, received a $464,892 grant from the U.S. Department of Energy for their 3-year project Novel Dense Membranes for Hydrogen Separation for Energy Applications.
Rebecca Hewitt, a graduate fellow with Alaska EPSCoR, received an honorable mention for her poster Going Underground: The role of mycorrhizal fungi in promoting or inhibiting post-fire seedling establishment across treeline in Alaska, which came in second place overall, at the 2009 Long-Term Ecological Research All Scientists meeting.
David D'Amore, SNRAS doctoral student, was named the National Field Soil Scientist of the Year by the USDA Forest Service for his work studying the die-off of yellow cedar in Southeast Alaska and developing a management strategy for conservation and restoration.
Sportsmedicine Fairbanks made a $10,000 gift toward its $50,000 pledge to Dr. Keller’s named scholarship. The scholarship supports UAF athletes who demonstrate perseverance, achievement and ability.
Alaska Neuroscience Associates made a gift of $5,000 to the UA Museum of the North’s paleontological research fund.
Golden Valley Electric Association made a gift of $5,000 to the UA Museum of the North’s Museum Exhibition Enhancement fund.
W.W. Grainger Inc. made a $4,000 gift to the Grainger Tools for Tomorrow Scholarship fund.
The Optimist Club of Fairbanks made a $2,500 gift in support of the Joe Nava Scholarship for students on the UAF rifle team.

Nanook hockey takes on Ferris State Friday and Saturday, Oct. 30 – 31, at 7 p.m. in the Carlson Center.
Nanook swimming faces Kutztown Friday, Oct. 30, at 6 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 31, at noon. Both meets will be held in the Patty Center pool.
The Alaska Nanook athletic event scores from last week are: Home games – volleyball vs. Western Washington, 0-3, and vs. Central Washington, 3-2. Away games – cross country men and cross country women at the GNAC Championships, men 8th place, women 7th place.
