Robert Hook has joined TVC's Process Technology Program as a faculty member.
Jennifer Jolis has accepted a faculty position with TVC's Culinary Arts Program. Jolis will join the program in January.
UA Press has two new books available. Alaska at 50: The Past, Present, and Next Fifty Years of Alaska Statehood, edited by G.W. Kimura, is a compilation of essays about Alaska. Where the Rivers Meet the Sky: A Collaborative Approach to Participatory Development by Timothy Kennedy chronicles his work as a VISTA volunteer in Noorvik in the mid-1960s. Skijor With Your Dog by Mari Høe-Raitto and Carol Kaynor is a guide to being pulled on skis by a dog in harness and has been updated for its fourth printing.
A. David McGuire, IAB and Alaska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit, is the lead author of a study that estimates arctic lands and oceans are responsible for up to 25 percent of the global net sink of atmospheric carbon dioxide. The study will be published this month in the journal Ecological Monographs. Daniel Hayes, UAF post-doctoral fellow, is a co-author.

The 2010 Global Change Student Research Grant Competition for UAF and UAA graduate and undergraduate students is now underway. Information and the application are available online. Paper copies can be picked up from the Center for Global Change and Arctic Systems Research at 306 Akasofu Building or the Graduate School at 202 Eielson Building. The Wood Center Information Desk has many services available to faculty, staff and students. The desk sells discounted movie tickets and balloon bouquets, and offers a lost and found service. For more information call 474-7034.

WIN for Alaska is offering seasonal flu shots Tuesday, Oct. 20, in the Wood Center and Thursday, Oct. 22, in the Akasofu Building lobby, both from 8 – 11 a.m. Shots cost $25 and insurance reimbursement forms will be available.
ARSC provides free training for new and current users of high-performance computing resources Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:15 – 11:15 a.m. in 009 West Ridge Research Building. Topics include Parallel Shared Memory Programming Using OpenMP Oct. 20, 22 and 27 (continued from Oct. 15) and Viz Part 2: Importing Data and Animation 101 Oct. 29 and Nov. 3.
The UA Museum of the North hosts a welcome reception for its new director Carol Diebel Tuesday, Oct. 20, from 5 – 7 p.m. Join the festivities and share your perspective on life in Alaska and the role of the museum in the community. For more information call 474-7505.

The Financial Aid Office presents Finan¢ial $ense, a series of workshops held each Thursday at 1 p.m. in 413 Gruening. The workshops are open to all faculty, staff, alumni and students. Saving Money takes place Oct. 22 and SAP and Other Financial Aid Rules takes place Oct. 29. Workshops can also be scheduled for a group or to replace a canceled class. UAF's TRiO programs present the film It's Not Going to Change, Unless I Change It – Helping Low-Income, First-Generation, College-Bound Students Succeed in Alaska Friday, Oct. 23 at 5 p.m. in Schaible Auditorium. A question and answer period will follow the film.
Theatre UAF presents How I Learned to Drive, written by Paula Vogel and directed by Carrie Baker, Friday and Saturday, Oct. 23 – 24, at 8:15 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 25, at 2 p.m. in the Salisbury Theatre. Admission is $14, $12 for seniors, military or UAF employees and $7 for students with ID.
The UAF Women's Studies Program presents a panel discussion, Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Anti-Gay Discourse, Tuesday, Oct. 27, from 1 – 2 p.m. in the Wood Center multilevel lounge.
TVC is celebrating its 35th anniversary and a rededication of the Tanana Valley Campus Center on Friday, Oct. 30, from 3 – 5 p.m.
The UA Museum of the North presents the museum Halloween tour Friday, Oct. 30, from 4 – 7 p.m. See bugs, bats, bears and birds in the museum's research labs. For costumed children ages 12 and under with parents. Free admission with a donation of canned food for the Fairbanks Community Food Bank. For more information call 474-7505.

Outdoor Adventures also offers a monthly slideshow series, The History of Alaskan Adventuring, with the next show Thursday, Oct. 22, and north campus hikes twice a month on Tuesdays with the next hike Oct. 27.
The University Women's Association is hosting its 41st annual Holiday Bazaar Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 7 – 8, from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. in the Wood Center. Courtesy shuttles will run from the Taku Parking Lot near Farmer's Loop to Wood Center.

Chuck Crapo, Alaska Sea Grant, has received two awards for his accomplishments in the seafood industry. Crapo received the 2009 Earl P. McFee award from the Atlantic Fisheries Technology Conference and the International Association of Fish Inspectors award.
Associated General Contractors gave $4,000 to the TVC Construction Management Scholarship Fund.
At its annual meeting Oct. 21, the Downtown Association of Fairbanks will recognize UAF for the major renovation of the TVC Center.

Scott Greenham, sophomore hockey player, was named the CCHA Goalie of the Week for the week of Oct. 11.
Dion Knelsen, senior hockey player, was named a 2009 Lowe's Senior CLASS award candidate.
Nanook volleyball takes on Western Washington Thursday, Oct. 22, at 7 p.m. and Central Washington Saturday, Oct. 24, at 7 p.m. Both games will be held in the Patty Center gym.
The Alaska Nanook athletic event scores from last week are: Home games – swimming vs. California University of Pennsylvania, 108-86 and 118-86 . Away games – volleyball vs. Northwest Nazarene, 0-3, and vs. Seattle Pacific, 1-3; hockey vs. Robert Morris, 4-2, and vs. Rensselaer, 1-1, the Nanooks won the Brice Alaska Goal Rush.
