Chancellor Rogers is hosting an open forum Tuesday, Nov. 10, from 1:30 – 2:30 p.m. in the Wood Center multilevel lounge.
The University Police Department, in coordination with local police departments, plans to conduct training exercises Wednesday – Friday, Nov. 11 – 13, on the UAF campus. The first two days of training will take place in Skarland Hall and the third day will be in the Butrovich Building. You may see police vehicles and personnel at both locations. The Rasmuson Library recently launched the Electronic Book Library, a collection of more than 90,000 electronic books. UAF faculty, staff and students can use the library's online catalog, Goldmine, to find, read and download books. New titles will be added monthly. The UA Board of Regents met in Fairbanks Oct. 30 to discuss the FY11 budget request. The board delayed taking action to allow further discussions with Gov. Parnell's budget office. The board's next regularly scheduled meeting is Nov. 30 – Dec. 1 in Anchorage.
Jordan Lewis, CLA, was selected by the National Institutes of Health as one of six people to serve on the Director's Council of Public Representatives, the advisory committee to the NIH director.
Glenn Juday, SNRAS, was the featured author in the Witness the Arctic newsletter with his article "Coincidence and Contradiction in the Warming Boreal Forest," published by the Arctic Research Consortium of the United States.
James Bicigo, CLA, and Sheri Throop, UAF alumna, were recognized for recent compositions in the October 2009 edition of the International Trumpet Guild Journal. The journal reviewed Bicigo's The Bremen Town Musicians and Throop's Playford Dances.
The UA Museum of the North’s Halloween event collected more than 450 pounds of food for the Fairbanks Community Food Bank. This is the second year the museum has used the Halloween event as a food-raiser.
Do you know what to do if you're told to shelter in place during an emergency? You should close and lock all windows and office doors; close shades, blinds or curtains and seek cover behind a dense, sturdy object; monitor online and broadcast news sources for information about when it is safe to leave; call 911 to report an emergency. ARSC provides free training for new and current users of high-performance computing resources Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:15 – 11:15 a.m. in 009 West Ridge Research Building. Topics include Parallel Distributed Memory Programming Using MPI Nov. 10, 12, 17, 19 and 24.
The UAF Wind Symphony, under the direction of Karen Gustafson, CLA, presents a fall concert Wednesday, Nov. 11, at 8 p.m. in Davis Concert Hall. Admission is $10 adults, $5 students, seniors or military, and children 12 and under are free. For more information call 474-7555.
The UAF Bookstore is hosting open forums in November. Small group meetings are being arranged by ASUAF and the Faculty Senate for Thursday, Nov. 12. Open forums take place Friday, Nov. 13, with a student forum at 12:30 p.m. and a faculty and staff forum at 1:30 p.m., both in the Wood Center multilevel lounge. The Financial Aid Office presents Finan˘ial $ense, a series of workshops held each Thursday at 1 p.m. in 413 Gruening. The workshops are open to all faculty, staff, alumni and students. Applying for Scholarships takes place Nov. 12 and Debt Management takes place Nov. 19. Workshops can also be scheduled for a group or to replace a canceled class. The Student Drama Association presents Winter Shorts 2009, student directed and produced one-act plays, featuring Zoo Story by Edward Albee and an adaptation of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. Show times are Friday and Saturday, Nov. 13 – 14 and Nov. 20 – 21, at 8:15 p.m., and Sunday, Nov. 22, at 2 p.m., in the Salisbury Theatre. Admission is $8 general or $6 with a UAF ID.
The UA Museum of the North presents its 15th annual military appreciation family day Saturday, Nov. 14, from noon – 4 p.m. Admission is free for all and includes Alaska Native artist demonstrations and access to the museum’s exhibit galleries. For more information contact 474-7505.
Admissions presents Discover UAF, a series of Saturday information sessions for prospective students and their parents to learn about UAF, ask questions and take a tour. The UA Foundation Gene Sharp Lectureship on Nonviolent Action presents journalist and author Dahr Jamail discussing GI resistance in Iraq and Afghanistan Sunday, Nov. 15, at 7 p.m. in Schaible Auditorium. Jamail is author of Beyond the Green Zone and The Will to Resist. A book signing will follow the lecture.

The UAF Chili Cook-off takes place Thursday, Dec. 3, from 11:30 a.m. – 2 p.m. in Wood Center multilevel lounge. Tickets are $3 for five chili tastings or $6 for unlimited chili tasting. Scott Greenham, sophomore Nanook hockey goaltender, was named the RBC Financial Group CCHA Player of the Month for October. Nanooks right wing Andy Taranto earned special mention for the CCHA Rookie of the Month for October.
Nanook volleyball senior Alexa Sherman was named the GNAC Player of the Week for the week ending Nov. 1.
The Alaska Nanook athletic event scores from last week are: Home games – hockey vs. Notre Dame, 2-3 and 3-1; men's basketball Blue vs. Gold, 109-94 (Gold) .
