The Rasmuson Library recently launched the Electronic Book Library, a collection of more than 90,000 electronic books. UAF faculty, staff and students can use the library's online catalog, Goldmine, to find, read and download books. New titles will be added monthly. The Museum Store, at the UA Museum of the North, will have copies of Going Rogue: An American Life by former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin for sale when the book is released nationally Tuesday, Nov. 17. Proceeds from the $28.99 book support the museum's exhibits, research and education programs.
The UAF Center for Health and Counseling is open for students with walk-in hours Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 8:30 a.m. – noon and 2 – 4 p.m., and Wednesday, 9:30 a.m. – noon and 2 – 4 p.m. The center now has injectable H1N1 and nasal spray vaccine available for students. The KUAC FM Fall Fundraiser raised $246,254 from 1,749 gifts, including 379 new donors. This is an 8 percent increase over last year. A new record was set for an amount raised in a single hour with $8,415 raised during Car Talk on Oct. 24. More than $17,000 was raised during both Opera Sundays, Oct. 18 and 25. Volunteers from the university and community answered phones, pitched on-air, made challenges to other donors and provided food and other support.
The Alaska Center for Energy and Power has begun the Wind for Schools program with Sherrod Elementary in Palmer where the program installed a wind turbine. The school will use the turbine along with corresponding curriculum as a teaching tool. ACEP and its partners, Renewable Energy Alaska Project and the National Renewable Energy Lab, plan to expand the project to 10 Alaska schools during the next year.
Sarah Arnold is the new membership marketing coordinator for UAF Alumni Relations and the UAF Alumni Association. Arnold is a 2002 graduate of UAF.
Deb Jones was hired by the Cooperative Extension Service as the 4-H program leader for Alaska. Jones will work in the Fairbanks office.
The UA Geography Program is celebrating Geography Awareness Week, Nov. 15 – 21, by hosting family geography nights at local schools and the visit of a giant map of North America to elementary schools across the state. The map is on loan from the National Geographic Society.
The Cooperative Extension Service has developed several new food preservation how-to resources including a new DVD, Sausage and Jerky, and six new interactive online Flash lessons that cover pickling vegetables, making sauerkraut, infusing vinegar, making sausage, making jerky and assembling a can sealer.
Two UA Press titles, An Aleutian Ethnography by Lucien M. Turner, edited by Raymond L. Hudson, and Wildflowers of Unalaska Island, by Suzi Golodoff, received favorable reviews in the Alaska Journal of Anthropology.
Outdoor Adventures is offering academic classes during the spring 2010 semester including Introduction to Technical Mountaineering by Frank Olive, two credits, instructor permission is required for this course; Introduction to Technical Climbing: Ice by Mark Oldmixon, one credit; and Introduction to Technical Climbing: Rock and Ice by Mark Oldmixon, one credit. Five Rural Alaska Honors Institute students created short films this summer on topics important to them and Alaska. The films were screened at the 2009 Elders and Youth Conference held in Anchorage in October and will be shown in Juneau and at the Alaska House in New York City.
Student Activities is hosting the Peter MacKeith Fall 2009 Amateur Photo Contest (doc). The contest is open to UAF students enrolled as of January 2009. The deadline for entries is Monday, Nov. 23 before 5 p.m. For more information call 474-6026.

The Master Planning Committee is hosting two public presentations by planning consultants Perkins+Will to share ideas on three distinct campus plan options that integrate new building needs and improvements to open space, circulation and access to parking. The presentations take place Monday, Nov. 16, from 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. in 501 Akasofu Building and Tuesday, Nov. 17, from 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. in the Great Hall. Comments and suggestions on the plans are welcome.
International Education Week is Nov. 16 – 21. Several events will take place including a multicultural mixer Monday, Nov. 16 at 5:30 p.m. in the Wood Center multilevel lounge; Tea Tasting 101, presented by Student Activities and Sipping Streams, Tuesday, Nov. 17, at 6 p.m., tickets are $5 and available at the Wood Center Front Desk; the Peggy McIntosh Lecture Thursday, Nov. 19, at 7 p.m. in the Wood Center Carol Brown Ballroom; and International Beer and Wine Tasting, presented by The Pub, Saturday, Nov. 21, at 8 p.m., must be 21 to attend. WIN for Alaska is offering a midday health forum on portion control Wednesday, Nov. 18, from noon – 12:30 p.m. in the Akasofu Building lobby. WIN also presents a holiday health screening Thursday, Nov. 19, from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. in 109 Butrovich Building.
Peggy McIntosh presents "Coming to See Privilege Systems: The Surprising Journey," Thursday, Nov. 19, at 7 p.m. in the Wood Center Carol Brown Ballroom. Admission is free, but seating is limited. The UA Museum of the North presents a free lecture, "Parks and Partnerships," by guest curator Annie Duffy Thursday, Nov. 19, at 7 p.m. Duffy will talk about the partnerships that led to the special exhibit Ascension: Exploring the Art of Denali and her role in communicating Denali's history.

The Institute of Arctic Biology Life Sciences Seminar presents "Rabies in Alaska: A 37-Year Record of Animal Cases and Human Exposures" by Don Ritter, retired manager of the Alaska State Virology Laboratory, Friday, Nov. 20, at 3:30 p.m. in 214 Elvey. The seminar is free and open to the public.

The Student Drama Association presents Winter Shorts 2009, student directed and produced one-act plays, featuring Zoo Story by Edward Albee and an adaptation of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. The UAF Chili Cook-off takes place Thursday, Dec. 3, from 11:30 a.m. – 2 p.m. in Wood Center multilevel lounge. Tickets are $3 for five chili tastings or $6 for unlimited chili tasting. Ilia Radoslavov, College of Liberal Arts, won the gold medal in the professional division at the Seattle International Piano Festival’s competition.
The UAF Center for Alaska Native Health Research is part of a nine-institution consortium that received a $15 million grant from the National Institutes of Health Center for Research Resources to develop a network to help researchers locate difficult-to-find resources for scientific research. CANHR will receive nearly $1.1 million over two years to identify and catalog past and present research in Alaska.

Eight Nanook volleyball players were named to the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Academic All-Conference volleyball team. Seniors Alexa Sherman, Hannah Armstrong, Jessica Hill and Megan Thigpen were selected for the third consecutive season. Senior Heather Lyons was selected for the first time. Juniors Erica Gage and Melissa Refuerzo were each selected for their second season on the team. Sophomore Jennifer Holland has the top GPA of the team with a perfect 4.0 mark in her first appearance on the team.
Nanook women's basketball takes on Hawaii-Hilo Tuesday and Wednesday, Nov. 17 – 18, at 7 p.m. in the Patty Center gym.
Nanook men's basketball hosts the 2009 Fairbanks Youth Sports Alaska Invitational Thursday – Saturday, Nov. 19 – 21, in the Patty Center gym. Games take place at 5:15 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. The Nanooks play at 7:30 p.m. each day.
Nanook rifle faces off with Air Force Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 21 – 22, at the E.F. Horton Rifle Range in Patty Center.
The Alaska Nanook athletic event scores from last week are: Home games – volleyball vs. Seattle Pacific, 0-3, and vs. Northwest Nazarene, 3-2. Away games – hockey vs. Bowling Green, 1-3 and 5-3.
