The UAF on Alert and the Statewide Risk Services websites have information on public health and safety, including the H1N1 virus and Redoubt volcano activity.
The Office of Information Technology warns faculty, staff and students to beware of e-mail scams. A recent e-mail phishing scam appeared to be from OIT asking you to click a link for a site to enter your e-mail password. OIT will not ask for personal information in an e-mail. All e-mails such as this should be deleted. If you have questions about an e-mail from the university, call OIT at 450-8300.
A UAF-wide committee is working on UAF's accreditation self-study for the next accreditation review. For more information e-mail Dana Thomas at dlthomas@alaska.edu.
Emily Drygas has been named the new director of development for UAF. Drygas was serving as acting director of development.
The UA Museum of the North is looking for volunteers to help with hands-on activities at the TOTE Family Fun Fest taking place Sunday, June 7. For more information or to volunteer call 474-5360 or e-mail museum.education@uaf.edu.
CEM Geological Engineering students in the Society of Women in Engineering helped refurbish the playground at the Fairbanks Rescue Mission during SpringFest.
UAF members of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars helped raise a $1,500 donation for First Bookonation for First Book, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide disadvantaged children with new books.
All campus phones and pay phones have 911 access. Emergency phones are marked with blue lights and are available throughout campus.
Most UAF offices will be closed Monday, May 25 in observance of Memorial Day.

The UA Museum of the North presents the special exhibit The Last Polar Bear: Facing the Truth of a Warming World. The exhibit includes large-format photos by Steven Kazlowski, film by Arthur C. Smith and polar bear skulls from the museum's mammal collection. The exhibit runs through Oct. 3. Admission is included in the museum general admission price of $10 adults, $5 youth 7 – 17 and free for children 6 or younger. The museum's summer hours are 9 a.m. – 9 p.m. daily. The Alaska Center for Climate Assessment and Policy is hosting a teleconference, "Experimental Forecast of Area Burned for Interior Alaska" by Paul Duffy, Tuesday, May 19, at 10 a.m. in 535 Duckering. For more information visit the ACCAP teleconference page online.
UA Press presents a lecture and book signing for Aleutian Islands of Alaska by editor and photographer Ken Wilson and co-editor Jeff Richardson Thursday, May 21, at 7 p.m. at the Morris Thompson Cultural and Visitor Center.
Opera Fairbanks presents a Gala Concert to celebrate the 50th anniversary of statehood, Friday, May 22, 7:30 p.m. in Hering Auditorium. An all-Alaska cast and orchestra features special guest Vivica Genaux. James Bicigo is orchestra coordinator and John Hopkins is chorus master for this production, both UAF Music Department. Admission is $45 for preferred seating, $35 for adults, $25 for seniors and military, and $10 for students.
The Fairbanks Flutists present their 28th annual Spring Concert Sunday, May 24, at 4 p.m. in Davis Concert Hall. For more information call 479-6701.
The Discovering Alaska lecture series, hosted by UAF Summer Sessions, takes place Wednesdays at 7 p.m. in Schaible Auditorium May 27 – Aug. 12. The series includes Neil Davis, UAF professor emeritus, discussing auroral sound May 27 and darleen masiak, AFES, June 3 discussing the need of artists to explore all aspects of art. Admission is free.
UAF Summer Sessions hosts free movie nights this summer with Reel History -- Documenting Alaska on Thursdays at 7 p.m., with City of Gold, Drifting Towards Winter and Gold May 28 and Seward: First 100 Years June 4; and Summer Sessions Cinema on Tuesdays during June at 7 p.m., with Billy the Kid (1942) June 2 and The Good, The Bad and The Ugly June 9. All movies will be shown in Schaible Auditorium.
Admissions presents Discover UAF, a series of Saturday information sessions for prospective students and their parents to learn about UAF, ask questions and take a tour. The next session takes place May 30 from 9 a.m. – noon; it will be hosted by Career Services and the Admissions Office. An Evening with Grace Berg Schaible, hosted by Summer Sessions, takes place Monday, June 1, at 7 p.m. in Davis Concert Hall. Schaible will share her life story including her years as an Alaska attorney and state attorney general.
The fifth Visual Arts Academy for students in grades 6 – 12 takes place June 8 – 19. Students can attend half- or full-day classes in computer art, digital photography, painting, printmaking, sculpture and 3-D design, ceramics, drawing, and metalsmithing. The Kids from Nowhere: The Story Behind the Arctic Educational Miracle, a book by George Guthridge CRCD Bristol Bay Campus, was selected as book of the year by the city of Huntington Beach, Calif.
Joseph Patz, petroleum engineering major, was awarded a Tau Beta Pi scholarship for his senior year.
