The UA Museum of the North has put the annual Chocolate Bash on hold this year due to hardships faced by its vendors. The museum is looking forward to the return of the Chocolate Bash in spring 2010.

The UAF Police Department reminds everyone parking on campus to be aware of possible vehicle theft. Make sure to take your keys with you and to lock your vehicle.

Faculty and staff authors who published a book between March 1, 2008, and March 1, 2009, are invited to submit them for the 2009 Authors' Reception, hosted by Chancellor Rogers and the Rasmuson Library. Submissions are due March 30. The reception will be held Friday, April 17, 4 – 5 p.m. on level six of the library. For more information and submission guidelines call 474-7224.

UA Press published The Rising and the Rain, a book of poetry about Alaska by Alaska Writer Laureate John Straley. UAF awarded Straley an honorary doctorate in 2008.

Amy Lovecraft, CLA, has been appointed to a three-year term on the Polar Research Board, a unit of the National Academies.

The UA Museum of the North is seeking photos that show how people live, work and play in Fairbanks for the upcoming special exhibit RENEW: Fairbanks Cityscapes. For more information or to submit your photos visit the website.

SNRAS
has partnered with the Indiana Soybean Alliance to road test Permaflo Biodiesel at northern latitudes. Permaflo is formulated to reduce the problems frequently associated with biodiesel in cold-weather conditions.

Celeste Leroux is blogging about her experiences working as a 2009 UAF Knauss Marine Policy Fellow in Washington, D.C.

The UAF Bookstore is sponsoring its 2nd annual Spring Break Yellow Bag contest. Take a photo of a bookstore yellow bag and win Alaska Airline miles; photos must be submitted March 16 – 20. The most creative will win 5,000 miles and a random drawing winner will receive 1,000 miles. Bookstore customers will vote on the winner March 23 – 27. For more information call 474-6858.

Most UAF offices will be closed March 13 for spring break.




 

Events

The UA Museum of the North presents Arctic Dinosaurs, a NOVA documentary about how dinosaurs managed to thrive in Alaska 70 million years ago Tuesday, March 10 at 6 p.m. After the showing, meet the museum’s paleontologists and check out the fossil collections. Admission is free. For more information call 474-7505.

Cooperative Extension Service hosts the fifth annual Sustainable Agriculture Conference and Organic Growers School Tuesday – Wednesday, March 17 – 18 at the Fairbanks Princess Lodge. For more information call 474-1530.

Alaska Sea Grant presents Exxon Valdez Oil Spill 20th anniversary events including the seminar Through the Lens of EVOS: The Unpredictable and Critical Role of Citizen Input in Environmental Crisis Management Thursday, March 19 from 4 – 5:30 p.m. in the Vera Alexander Learning Center, 201 O'Neill.

Grants and Awards

UA Statewide's marketing campaign Do Something Major won a silver award for image advertising campaign and the bobblehead Career Transformers won bronze for direct mail effort, awarded by the Admissions Marketing Report. Bobblehead Career Transformers also received the first-place Aurora Award from the Alaska Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America.




 

Nanook hockey will host a best-of-three CCHA playoff quarterfinal against Ohio State Friday – Saturday, March 13 – 14 at 7 p.m. and, if needed, Sunday, March 15 at 6 p.m. at the Carlson Center. Support the Nanooks and join the White Out by wearing all-white clothing to the games and "freeze" out the competition. A special CCHA Playoff promotion will give white towels to the first 2,000 fans in attendance at Friday and Saturday's game.

Chad Johnson
, senior Nanook hockey goalie, has been chosen to represent the West team at the fourth annual Frozen Four Skills Challenge, set for Friday, April 10 in Washington, D.C. Johnson is the first player in Nanook program history to earn the honor.

April 6, 2009: Applications for the IAB Graduate Research Fellowships in Human Health for summer 2009 are due.
