Headlines

Ted Stevens’ Senate documents and papers, an estimated 5,000 boxes, are coming to the Rasmuson Library under an agreement between Stevens and UA President Hamilton. The documents span Stevens’ 40-year career in Washington, D.C. It will take an estimated two to three years to assess and process the collection. The Rasmuson Library is the only facility in the UA system capable of accommodating the extensive collection.




 

For Your Information

Slips, trips and falls are the leading cause of accidents at UAF. As snow melts and refreezes, walkways can be extra slick. To avoid injury, be sure to have secure footing when getting in and out of your vehicle and wear proper footgear or slip grippers over your boots and shoes.

UAF’s opening enrollment numbers increased slightly for spring 2009, according to Statewide Planning and Institutional Research. The largest growth occurred at the Fairbanks campus, followed by Interior-Aleutians Campus and Bristol Bay Campus. UAF was the only MAU whose spring student headcount increased.

Greg Petrowich, KUAC, is leaving to become executive director of the WSIU Broadcasting Service at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Petrowich came to KUAC in 2002. His last day will be March 20.

TVC’s Paralegal Studies Program was reaccredited for 2008 – 2015 by the American Bar Association.

Help keep our campus clean and safe
. UAF policy states that pets on campus must be on a leash and are not allowed in campus buildings. There have been numerous reports of conflicts with loose pets and instances of animals causing damage to classrooms and offices. To report violations call the UAF Police Department at 474-7721. For reports of damage or pet debris call 474-7000.

More than 60 employees have completed the required supervisor training as of Feb. 20. For more information or to sign up for a class visit the HR training website.

UAF’s Grapevine website is designed to dispel rumors, clarify misconceptions and clear up misunderstandings about UAF topics of a general nature. If you want to find out if something you’ve heard is true, submit your rumor and find out.

Spring Break 2009 is March 9 – 13. There are no classes held that week. Most UAF offices will be closed March 13.

Employee notice, protection for whistleblowers: Any employee may in good faith report to testify before a public agency concerning: a violation of federal, state or local law; a danger to public health or safety; gross mismanagement; a substantial waste of funds or clear abuse of authority; or a matter under investigation by the state. Employee protections and obligations regarding reports of these matters of public concern are fully stated in Alaska statutes 39.90.100 through 39.90.150, which are available for review at 201 Eielson Building.




 

Events

The Provost’s Office, CRCD and Statewide Academic Affairs present the first Northern Geriatric Education Center Summit and the fourth annual Lilly Arctic Institute on Innovations and Excellence. Murray Gell-Mann, keynote speaker at the Lessons from Community and Change in the Fourth International Polar Year symposium, will give a public lecture, “A Crude Look at the Whole,” Wednesday, March 4 at 6 p.m. in the Wood Center Carol Brown Ballroom.

ARSC's newest supercomputer, a Cray XT5 named Pingo, will be dedicated March 5 at 10:30 a.m. in the UA Museum of the North Auditorium. Cray president and CEO Peter Ungaro will participate in the celebration. The virtual ribbon-cutting event will be webcast live.

The UAF Bookstore will host open forums for faculty and students about the transition to online purchase of textbooks Thursday, March 5 in the Wood Center multilevel lounge. The forum geared for faculty will be from 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m.; the student forum will be from 1:30 – 3 p.m. Fred Weber, senior vice president of operations for Follett Higher Education Group, along with Bookstore and Auxiliary Services staff, will share information and answer questions. The Financial Aid Office presents Financial $ense, a series of workshops held each Thursday at 1 p.m. in 413 Gruening. The workshops are open to all faculty, staff and students. Eight Stars of Chocolate, the 23rd annual UA Museum of the North chocolate bash, takes place Saturday, April 4 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $60; sales begin March 9. Must be 21 to attend. For more information call 474-7505. **This event has been canceled.

The UA Museum of the North presents Arctic Dinosaurs, a NOVA documentary about how dinosaurs managed to thrive in Alaska 70 million years ago Tuesday, March 10 at 6 p.m. After the showing, meet the museum’s paleontologists and check out the fossil collections. Cooperative Extension Service hosts the fifth annual Sustainable Agriculture Conference and Organic Growers School Tuesday – Wednesday, March 17 – 18 at the Fairbanks Princess Lodge. For more information call 474-1530.

Grants and Awards

Galen Johnson, TVC, was named Engineer of the Year by the Fairbanks chapter of the Alaska Society of Professional Engineers.

Brooke Hill, Elizabeth Humphries and Jack Withrow, all UAF Biology and Wildlife graduate students, received awards from the 2009 Angus Gavin Memorial Migratory Bird Research Grant. Hill will receive $7,000 for “Factors Affecting Shorebird Chick Survival From Initial and Replacement Clutches in a Fox-Free Arctic Environment.” Humphries and Withrow will receive $7,000 for their proposal “Quantifying Genomic Divergence in Beringian Birds for Management and Research.”

Dave Klein, IAB professor emeritus, established the Olaus Murie Scholarship to assist graduate students to carry on the efforts of Olaus Murie and other wildlife biologists, enabling students to attend conferences, symposia, and workshops to make presentations about their research.

Kenneth Zonge, alumnus and former professor, and his wife Kim Zonge, made a $100,000 gift to support electrical engineering and mining scholarships.

Wells Fargo provided $50,000 in continued support of the Rural Alaska Honors Institute’s business class curriculum during RAHI’s summer program.

Northrim Bank gave $30,000 to the UAF School of Management in unrestricted funding in support of various SOM priority projects, including the new UAF Arctic Innovation Program, a business-plan competition. Northrim also gave $15,000 to the UA Museum of the North to support the Museum Director’s Fund.

Interior Alaska Building Association gave $25,000 to create the Interior Alaska Building Association Memorial to support students in the fields of drafting technology, civil engineering, construction management and residential architecture.

Greg Whisenhant gave a gift of $10,000 in continued support of the Beaver Sports Whisenhant Ski Scholarship in support of UAF student-athletes.




 

Nanook men’s basketball takes on Western Oregon March 5 at 5:15 p.m. and Saint Martin’s March 7 at 3 p.m. in the Patty Center gym.

Pack the Patty for Nanook women’s basketball final game of the season and Senior Night against Montana State Billings March 5 at 7:30 p.m. in the Patty Center gym.

Nanook hockey freshman forward Ron Meyers was named CCHA Rookie of the Week for the week ending Feb. 22.

Senior Nanook hockey goalie Chad Johnson has been chosen as a contender for the Hobey Baker award. Vote for him online.

Senior Nanook hockey left wing Trevor Hyatt has been selected as a finalist for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS award. Vote for him online.

The Alaska Nanook athletic events scores from last week are: Home Games – hockey vs UAA, 0-1. Away games – hockey vs UAA, 0-3; men’s basketball vs Northwest Nazarene, 68-89 and vs Central Washington, 71-85; women’s basketball vs Western Washington, 32-77 and vs Central Washington, 58-63.
