The Alaska Nanook hockey team beat Ohio State in two of three games March 13 – 15, 4-0, 2-4 and 1-0, to earn a spot in the CCHA hockey championships being held March 20 – 21 in Detroit. The Nanooks will play March 20 in the semifinals and March 21 in the finals. Senior goalie Chad Johnson is a finalist for the RBC Financial Group CCHA Player of the Year award. First-year head coach Dallas Ferguson is a finalist for the 12-team league's Coach of the Year award.

Chancellor Rogers has named Bob Shefchik as UAF's new executive officer. Shefchik will be a member of the chancellor's cabinet and serve as a liaison between the Chancellor's Office and community and state officials and organizations. He begins his new duties March 23.
Marilyn Sigman is the new Alaska Sea Grant Marine Advisory Program marine education specialist. Sigman will help create the Center for Ocean Science Education Excellence in Alaska, funded by a five-year grant from the National Science Foundation. She will be based in Anchorage.
Evelyn Ekada is the new administrative assistant for Rural Student Services.
Debbie Toopetlook and Carol Murphrey, RSS, successfully completed the National Academic Advising Association Administers Institute and the Assessment Institute. Toopetlook and Catherine Moses, education major and Association of Village Council Presidents student liaison, presented "Peer Advisors as a Tool for Student Success" at the First Year Experience national conference in Orlando, Fla.
Alaska Sea Grant recently published Marine Debris in Alaska: Coordinating Our Efforts, edited by Mike Williams and Erika Ammann, both of NOAA. The book summarizes current cleanup programs and discussions on coordination debris prevention and cleanup.

Mark Johnson, IMS, and Molly McCammon, Alaska Ocean Observing System, are hosting a teleconference about the Alaska Marine Information System, a web-based clearinghouse for climate data, Tuesday, March 17, at 10 a.m. The event is sponsored by Alaska Center for Climate Assessment and Policy. UAF's Students Who Enjoy Economic Thinking present Jeffrey Hummel, San Jose State University, discussing the causes and consequences of the recent economic downturn Tuesday, March 17, at 1 p.m. in the Wood Center Carol Brown Ballroom and Wednesday, March 18, at 7 p.m. at Friends Community Church.
Staff Council's next staff tours of UAF will be of the UAF Police Department and the University Fire Department. Alaska Sea Grant presents Exxon Valdez Oil Spill 20th anniversary events including the seminar Through the Lens of EVOS: The Unpredictable and Critical Role of Citizen Input in Environmental Crisis Management Thursday, March 19, from 4 – 5:30 p.m. in the Vera Alexander Learning Center, 201 O'Neill.
The Festival of Native Arts takes place Thursday – Saturday, March 19 – 21 from 6 p.m. – midnight each day. Performances will be in the Davis Concert Hall; the potlatch and powwow in the Great Hall; and arts and crafts in the Wood Center Carol Brown Ballroom.
The UA Museum of the North presents an IPY lecture by a panel of scientists moderated by Carl Benson, GI, titled "Changing Glaciers" Thursday, March 19, at 7 p.m. Admission is free.

A Business and Education Program Showcase featuring faculty from the University of Alaska Southeast will be held at the TVC Center on Thursday, March 26, from 12 – 2 p.m. and 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. The showcase is for students interested in UAS' online master of business administration, master of public administration, and master of arts in teaching or education.
