UA President Mark Hamilton informed the University of Alaska Board of Regents he plans to retire. No specific retirement date was set. Hamilton informed the board in order to allow time for the selection process to begin.
Chancellor Rogers was appointed by Gov. Palin to serve on the Alaska Natural Gas Development Authority.

One of UAF's best-kept secrets is the accessibility of our research faculty — especially scientists who are willing to mentor young people. KUAC FM's automation system suffered a significant system failure on Friday, June 12. Programming will change significantly this week while the issue is addressed.

Kathryn Gramatico is the new undergraduate advisor and admissions outreach coordinator for the School of Management.
Hans Nielsen, GI, is first author of "High Time-Resolution Sprite Imaging: Observations and Implications" published in the December 2008 issue of The Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics and the January/February 2009 issue of Europhysics News. Nielsen has worked since 2005 with M.G. McHarg, UAF alumnus, to use an ultra-high speed camera to take 10,000-frames-a-second images of sprites.
UAF's Alaska Center for Energy and Power and the Tanana Chiefs Conference have formed a partnership to find clean and affordable rural energy solutions for the 42 communities in the TCC region.

The GI STEP program is hosting 42 K-12 teachers from across the state to help instructors use GI research in their classrooms. The program is in its final year, but lesson plans developed during the program will continue to be available online.

The UAF Music Academy is hosting several concerts including Monday – Thursday, June 15 – 18, daily recitals at 1 p.m.; Wednesday, June 17, pre-concert World Beat and Percussion at 6:30 p.m. and Jazz Night at 7 p.m.; Thursday, June 18, pre-concert String Groups at 6:30 p.m. and Academy Orchestras concert at 7 p.m.; Friday, June 19, Steel Drums at 2 p.m., Choirs at 2:30 p.m., Steel Drums and Ensembles at 3:30 p.m., Jazz Band and Combos at 4 p.m., pre-concert Ensembles at 6:30 p.m., and Bands concert at 7 p.m. All pre-concert performances are held in the Great Hall and all concerts are held in Davis Concert Hall and are free. UAF Summer Sessions hosts free movie nights this summer with Summer Sessions Cinema on Tuesdays during June at 7 p.m with The Wild Bunch June 16, Unforgiven June 23 and 3:10 to Yuma June 30; and Reel History -- Documenting Alaska on Thursdays at 7 p.m., with Pedal to the Midnight Sun June 18 and The Aleutian: Steaming to Disaster and Deadly Passion: The Tragedy in Katmai June 25. All movies will be shown in Schaible Auditorium.

The Alaska State House Energy Committee is hosting a public meeting Wednesday, June 17, from 5 – 7 p.m. in the Board of Regents conference room in Butrovich Building to take public testimony about a state energy plan. The Discovering Alaska lecture series, hosted by UAF Summer Sessions, takes place Wednesdays at 7 p.m. in Schaible Auditorium May 27 – Aug. 12. The series includes "The D.A. Never Rests: The Rise of Ted Stevens in 1950s Fairbanks" by Terrence Cole, CLA, June 17; Dirk Lummerzheim, GI, discussing the colors of the aurora and what we can learn from them; and Peter Webley, GI, discussing volcanic ash clouds, how to detect them, predict their movements and warn of potential hazards. Admission is free.
A farewell celebration for Tim Barnett, vice chancellor for student and enrollment services, will take place Thursday, June 18, from 3 – 5 p.m. on the upper deck of Wood Center. Barnett has accepted a position with the University of Illinois at Springfield as vice chancellor for student affairs. His last day is expected to be June 19. For more information call 474-7317.

The Office of the Provost invites the UAF community to an ice cream social honoring Doris Nichols, who is retiring after 30 years of service, Tuesday, June 23, from 4 – 6 p.m. on the upper level of Lola Tilly Commons. UAF will host the first Really Free Market June 27 from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. in the Patty Center parking lot. All items will be free to the public. Bring something you don't want and find something you can use. Any items left after closing will be donated to agencies in the community. Admissions presents Discover UAF, a series of Saturday information sessions for prospective students and their parents to learn about UAF, ask questions and take a tour. The UA Museum of the North and IAB are hosting a free public presentation of Darwin Remembers: Recollections of a Life's Journey Sunday, June 28, at 7 p.m. in Davis Concert Hall. Floyd Sandford presents a one-man living history re-enactment of highlights from Darwin's personal and scientific milestones.

Rich Seifert, CES, winner of the 2009 Emil Usibelli Distinguished Service Award, donated his $10,000 prize to create the UAF Honors Retrofit Project, in tribute to the students of the Sustainable Campus Task Force.
The Boeing Company donated $10,000 to support the Rural Alaska Honors Institute and the Alaska Native Science and Engineering Program.
Facilities Services has the highest customer service rating of all public schools west of the Rockies in the Sightlines database of more than 230 schools.
KUAC TV received an award for outreach efforts for its production of International Polar Year segments from the National Educational Telecommunications Association. Claudia Clark, Deb Lawton, Aaron Elterman, KUAC, and Lynne Snifka, CLA, were recognized for their efforts on the project.
Jen Gunderson, Alaska Sea Grant, received the Outstanding Professional Skill Award in graphic design from the Association for Communication Excellence. Gunderson was considered for the "best of the best" award after she won a gold award for the cover design for Rat Control for Alaska Waterfront Facilities.
Kyan Olanna, UAF alumna and RAHI graduate, gave $5,000 to create a new RAHI Alumni Scholarship.
Statewide employees annual staff campaign generously supported UAF scholarships and other funds, including the new Phil Rounds Memorial Scholarship, the Fine Arts Fund, and Annual Giving.
Shelley Woods received the Outstanding Student Award from SFOS. Woods also received a $2,000 scholarship as the outstanding senior in the fisheries undergraduate program. SFOS also gave scholarships to Keegan Birchfield, $2,000 as outstanding junior; Chris Oliver, $1,500 as outstanding sophomore; and Mark Setzer, $1,500 as outstanding freshman.
