UA President Hamilton named Brian Rogers chancellor of UAF. Rogers has served as interim chancellor since July 2008.
The Alaska Department of Health and Social Services virology laboratory in Fairbanks reported the first positive test for the H1N1 (swine) flu in Alaska May 27. For more information visit UAF on Alert.

Tim Barnett, UAF vice chancellor for student and enrollment services, has accepted a position with the University of Illinois at Springfield as vice chancellor for student affairs. His last day is expected to be June 19.
UAF's designation as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education for academic years 2009 – 2014 was renewed by the National Security Agency and the Department of Homeland Security.
UAF will host the first UAF Really Free Market June 27 from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. in the Patty Center parking lot. All items will be free to the public. Bring something you don't want and find something you can use. Any items left after close will be donated to agencies in the community. Organizers are looking for volunteers to help with the market. The Alaska Region Research Vessel will be the first project funded from the National Science Foundation's portion of the nation's economic stimulus funds, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

Alaska Sea Grant Marine Advisory Program has released a set of videos to help commercial fishermen improve the quality of their salmon catch. Topics include boat setup, product handling, chilling, and cleaning and sanitizing. Videos are available online, or single copies of DVDs are free as long as supplies last. Shiva Hullavarad and Nilima Hullavarad, both OEM, presented three papers at the Materials Research Society's spring meeting in April.
Izetta Chambers was hired as the new Bristol Bay Marine Advisory agent. Chambers will begin her duties Aug. 15.
The Interior-Aleutians Campus' Troth Yeddha' Nutrition Project was discussed in the cover story on subsistence in the June issue of Alaska Magazine.
The UAF Leadership Program's fourth alternative break program sent eight students to El Salvador May 21 – June 7 to work at the Center for Arts for Peace and to visit rural villages to learn about microlending.
The UAF Police website has been redesigned and some URLs have changed.
The UA Geography Program is offering two new courses this fall. Geography 493/693 Landscape and Language will examine the ways human experiences of landscape shape cognition and vice versa. UAF Planting Day takes place Wednesday, June 3. Volunteers may plant during the morning, 9 a.m. – noon, or the afternoon, 1 – 4 p.m. All volunteers are invited to a barbecue at the chancellor's residence at noon. Parking is free in the Nenana lot across from the Patty Center. Ride the flower shuttle and check in outside Constitution Hall. UAF Summer Sessions hosts free movie nights this summer with Reel History -- Documenting Alaska on Thursdays at 7 p.m., with Seward: First 100 Years June 4 and Pedal to the Midnight Sun June 18; and Summer Sessions Cinema on Tuesdays during June at 7 p.m., Billy the Kid (1942) June 2, The Good, The Bad and The Ugly June 9, and The Wild Bunch June 16. All movies will be shown in Schaible Auditorium.
Ice Cream Thursdays, presented by Student Activities, include ice cream cones for $1 and live music outside Wood Center.
The TOTE Family Fun Fest, hosted by the UA Museum of the North, takes place Sunday, June 7 from noon – 4 p.m. under the big top tent on the museum's east lawn. Admission is $3 per child. For more information call 474-7505.

The Discovering Alaska lecture series, hosted by UAF Summer Sessions, takes place Wednesdays at 7 p.m. in Schaible Auditorium May 27 – Aug. 12. The series includes Brian Barnes, IAB director, discussing how animals survive the cold, dark and long winters June 10 and "The D.A. Never Rests: The Rise of Ted Stevens in 1950s Fairbanks" by Terrence Cole, CLA, June 17. Admission is free.

Admissions presents Discover UAF, a series of Saturday information sessions for prospective students and their parents to learn about UAF, ask questions and take a tour. The next session takes place June 13 from 9 a.m. – noon; it will be hosted by College of Engineering and Mines and the Admissions Office. The Alaska IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence received a five-year, $17.7 million National Institutes of Health grant to continue supporting biomedical programs in Alaska. This funding initiates the second phase of the INBRE program.
Syun-Ichi Akasofu made two donations totaling $50,000 to the International Arctic Research Center fund and the Geophysical Institute Associates Endowment Fund.
The Bernard Osher Foundation renewed support for the Osher Re-entry Scholarships at UAF with a $50,000 gift. This program helps students returning to finish their baccalaureate degree after a lapse of five years or more.
The UAF Alumni Association pledged $30,000 to the Athletics Department in support of a Nanook Hall of Fame awards display case in Patty Center, and donated $10,000 toward that pledge.
Gary Laursen, IAB, pledged $25,000 to establish a graduate fellowship for mycology students, the first fellowship of its kind at UAF.
Northrim Bank made a $15,000 gift to the UA Museum of the North, becoming the museum's newest corporate partner.
UAF Development’s Annual Giving program won the Grand Gold award from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education for its Young Alumni flash video in the video fundraising category.
Career Services received the Family Friendly Workplace Award from the Fairbanks Chamber of Commerce.
Jen Gunderson, Alaska Sea Grant, won a gold award from the Association for Communication Excellence for the cover design for Rat Control for Alaska Waterfront Facilities.
The University Women's Association awarded 12 scholarships for 2009. Winners were Shaina Bhojwani, Bethany Coblentz, Yiwen Fan, Hannah Harrison, Dawn Holt, Nicole Feemster, Jennifer Grieve, Heather Neal, Gloria Oseguera, Nicole Torre, Christina Twogood and Regina White.
Amy Snider, political science and natural resource management major, and Zazell Staheli, biology major, were chosen Udall Scholars for 2009.
