TVC's Automotive Technology Program received national certification from the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation.

Sally Skrip is the new assistant to the provost. Skrip, formerly with SES, began her new duties July 1.
Sherry Lynch, CGCASR and CIFAR, was selected to serve as report coordinator for the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
Jennifer Chambers, undergraduate honors chemistry major, was appointed by Gov. Palin to the Alaska Commission on Postsecondary Education and will serve a two-year term representing full-time college students.
Peter Schweitzer, CLA and Alaska EPSCoR, was the only North American speaker at the European Polar Summit in Brussels, Belgium, on June 24.
Brian Barnes, director of the IAB, will deliver a special-named lecture at the 36th Congress of the International Union of Physiological Sciences in Kyoto, Japan, in July in honor of the founder of the field of physiology, Knut Schmidt-Nielsen.
UAF Advancement Services now reports to the UA Foundation. The change was made to centralize functions such as gift acceptance and processing, Foundation fund management and reporting, and alumni donor data operations. The service center will remain with UAF Development at the West Valley Plaza.
The UAF 2008 – 2009 promotion and tenure recipients are listed online. Awards of tenure and/or promotion were effective July 1.

UAF has announced the students named to the spring 2009 deans' and chancellor's lists.

Alumni Drive construction continues. The current timeline includes: through July 24, the speed limit will be reduced to 10 mph and a flag person will be present; from July 24 – Sept. 3, one lane, westbound, uphill traffic only; Sept. 3 – mid-October, a flag person will direct traffic. Traffic will detour to Thompson Drive or Farmers Loop. The restriction is expected to last about a month and is needed to complete the first phase of the critical electrical distribution renewal project. For more information call 474-7000.
Work will begin this week to reconfigure portions of Signers' Hall and the Eielson Building to create "one-stop shopping" for students, streamlining their interactions with the Business Office, Registrar's Office, Financial Aid and other departments. Artist Todd Sherman, CLA, is showcasing his new artwork at the Annex Gallery, located at 2922 Parks Highway, through Friday, July 31. The gallery is open Tuesday – Saturday from 1 – 6 p.m.
The UAF Property Office is hosting a public auction July 18 beginning at 10 a.m. The office will be closed July 13 – 22 and will not accept or allow pick-up of surplus items. For more information call 474-6137.
Summer Sessions hosts free movie nights this summer. On Tuesdays, movies from the Alaska Center for Documentary Film are shown: The Last Kayak: The Story of the Last Nunamiut Kayak on Earth, July 14; Uksuum Cauyai: The Drums of Winter, July 21; and From the First People and On the Spring Ice, July 28. On Thursdays, the featured movies from Reel History — Documenting Alaska are: Junk Dreams, July 16; Nuclear Dynamite, July 23; and Arctic Dance: Mardy Murie, July 30. All movies will be shown in Schaible Auditorium at 7 p.m..
The UA Museum of the North presents Alaska's fiddling poet, Ken Waldman, Tuesday, July 14, from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. Free with museum admission. For more information call 474-7505.
Tom Lowenstein, UA Press author, will speak at the Arctic Economic Development Summit in Point Hope Wednesday, July 15. Lowenstein will speak on traditions vs. development and modernity. He is the author of Ultimate Americans: Point Hope, Alaska: 1826 – 1909.
UAF Summer Sessions and CES present "Politics of Food – Personal Responsibility vs. Social Responsibility" by Marion Nestle Wednesday, July 15, at 7 p.m. in Schaible Auditorium. More information is available at 474-7021 or summer@uaf.edu.
The Discovering Alaska lecture series, hosted by UAF Summer Sessions, takes place Wednesdays at 7 p.m. in Schaible Auditorium May 27 – Aug. 12. There is no lecture July 15 due to the "Politics of Food" lecture. The series includes Dermot Cole discussing "Alaska at 50: The First Half-Century of Alaska Statehood," and Derek Sikes, UA Museum of the North, discussing recent efforts to document the Alaskan arthropod fauna, including discoveries in the Aleutians. Admission is free.
The UA Museum of the North presents book signings by Debbie Miller and John Luther Adams. Miller will be available Wednesday, July 15, and Luther Adams will be available Friday, July 17, both from 1 – 4 p.m. Both are free with museum admission. For more information call 474-7505.

The UAF Alumni Association is hosting the following events this summer: the Southcentral chapter annual barbecue Saturday, July 18, from 1 – 4 p.m. at the Anchorage Aviation Museum; the Fairbanks Freshman Send-off Sunday, July 19, at the Square Dance Pavilion at Pioneer Park from 3 – 5 p.m.; and the Fairbanks Chapter hamburger booth at the Tanana Valley State Fair Aug. 7 – 15. The 2009 Far North Conservation Film Festival, presented by the UAF Student Activities Office and the UAF student chapter of the Wildlife Society, along with the Alaska Public Lands Information Center, National Park Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the FNSB Department of Parks and Recreation takes place Saturday, July 18, from 6 – 10 p.m., in Schaible Auditorium. On Sunday, July 19, the festival moves to the Morris Thompson Cultural and Visitors Center from 1 – 3 p.m. and to the Pioneer Park Centennial Center for the Arts from 6 – 10 p.m. The festival includes films and activities for all ages to promote the conservation and sustainability of wildlife, wild places and cultures around the world.
The Golden Days historical photographic reprint sale, hosted by the Alaska History Store, takes place Thursday – Friday, July 23 – 24, from 9:30 a.m. – 6 p.m., and Saturday, July 25, from 9:30 a.m. – 3 p.m. at the Sadler's Home Furnishings Building, 610 Cushman St. The proceeds will benefit the preservation work of the Alaska and Polar Regions Collections of the Rasmuson Library.
Outdoor Adventures offers trips and rental equipment to students, faculty, staff and alumni. Upcoming trips include sea kayaking in Whittier July 23 – 29; Denali raft Saturday, July 25; Gulkana River rafting Aug. 1 – 4; kayak skills workshop Thursday, Aug. 6; Fairbanks to Nenana float Aug. 8 – 9; and Wrangells backpacking Aug. 13 – 18. Admissions presents Discover UAF, a series of Saturday information sessions for prospective students and their parents to learn about UAF, ask questions and take a tour. The next session takes place July 25 from 9 a.m. – noon; it will be hosted by the College of Liberal Arts and the Admissions Office. Todd Paris, Marketing and Communications photo manager, recently won Best in Show at the print competition during the University Photographers' Association of America's annual technical symposium in Jamestown, NY. Paris also won second place in the sports category and third place in science. His winning entry of students participating in the burling competition in last fall's Forest Sports Festival is this Cornerstone issue's featured photo.
Franz Meyer and Jeremy Nicoll, GI, will receive the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society Symposium Prize Paper Award July 16. Their paper, titled "The Impact of the Ionosphere on Interferometric SAR Processing," was presented at the 2008 International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium in Boston. The paper was selected from more than 1,000 accepted for oral presentations at last year's IGARSS.
