The UAF Police Department and Alaska State Troopers are warning the public about a new identity theft scam. A caller pretending to be a jury coordinator says you failed to show up for assigned jury duty and then asks for personal information. Do not give the caller any personal information! To check the validity of the call, hang up and call the local jury office. For more information visit the FBI website.
The Chancellor’s Transition Team reports are complete and nearly two dozen recommendations are currently being implemented. Progress reports are available online.
Brook Gamble is the new Alaska Center for Climate Assessment and Policy assistant coordinator.
The Student-Faculty Awards Committee is accepting nominations for the Marion Frances Boswell Memorial Award, the Joel Wiegert Award and the Gray Tilly Memorial Award. The deadline for nominations is Feb. 20. For more information contact Lydia Anderson at 474-7037.
The 2009 Global Change Student Research Grant competition is accepting proposals. The competition is open to students at UAF and, for the first time, also to students at UAA. The award amounts are higher this year. Undergraduates are also encouraged to apply and submit a pre-proposal for feedback by Feb. 16. The guidelines have changed substantially, be sure to review them before submitting your proposal. Final proposals are due March 6.
The UA advocacy website provides regular updates and information about legislative issues affecting the university. You can receive e-mail updates by joining the listserve.
The UA Health In Action program begins a new Get the Point incentive program Feb. 1. There are new prizes and a more user-friendly tracking system.

The 2009 Science for Alaska Lecture Series takes place Tuesdays at 7 p.m. in the Westmark Gold Room. “Planes Without Pilots: Using Unmanned Aircraft for Research,” by Greg Walker, Poker Flat Research Range, takes place Jan. 27 and “Is Alaska’s Oil Age Ending? Living Energy Efficient” by Rich Seifert, CES, takes place Feb. 3.
A retirement celebration honoring Joan Braddock, dean of CNSM, takes place Tuesday, Jan. 27 from 4 – 6 p.m. in 201 Reichardt.

The Alaska Center for Energy and Power begins an energy lecture series with “Biomass Energy for Alaska,” Wednesday, Jan. 28 at 6:30 p.m. at the Noel Wien Library. The lecture series will continue on the third Wednesday each month.
Fairbanks Knowledge Industry Networking meets Thursday, Jan. 29, 2009 at 5:30 p.m. at Los Amigos restaurant to bring together local professionals in a social networking atmosphere. The event is cosponsored by the UAF Alumni Association and the Fairbanks Economic Development Corporation.
Theatre UAF is holding auditions for the spring production of The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari Saturday, Jan. 31 at 10 a.m. in the Salisbury Theatre.
The Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival is hosting the Cabaret class concert Saturday, Jan. 31 at 7:30 p.m. in the Westmark Northern Latitudes room. Admission is $10 at the door. The steel drum class takes place Wednesdays from 5:30 – 7 p.m. in The Music Room, Feb. 4 – April 8. To register for the class contact Mason Damrau at masondamrau@gci.net; the course fee is $50. Nanook women’s swimming takes on Shippensburg Friday, Jan. 30 at 5 p.m. and Saturday, Jan. 31 at noon in the Patty Center pool.
Nanook hockey faces off with Ohio State Friday – Saturday, Jan. 30 – 31 at 7 p.m. in the Carlson Center.
