Paul Layer is the interim dean for the College of Natural Science and Mathematics.

Fred Schlutt has accepted the position of vice provost for extension and outreach and director of the Cooperative Extension Service. Schlutt has been involved with Extension since 1979, in Texas, Wyoming, and most recently, Maine. Schlutt will begin his duties May 1.

Sights and sounds, a new website filled with multimedia about UAF, was recently launched by Marketing and Communications.

Poker Flat Research Range successfully launched its second mission of the season Jan. 29. Two rockets were launched for the Auroral Current and Electrodynamics Structure mission, to gather data at the top and bottom edges of an auroral arc.

Several UAF scientists are included on a list of climate change scientists whose work other researchers most often cite in their own studies. Included on the list are John Walsh, Larry Hinzman, Syun-Ichi Akasofu, and Bill Hibler, all of IARC; Gerhard Kramm and Glenn Shaw, both with GI; Mark Johnson, SFOS; A. David McGuire, IAB.

Courtney Carothers, SFOS, recently published Enclosing the Fisheries: People, Places and Power, co-edited with Marie Lowe, UAA.

Jan Rowell was promoted to research assistant professor in the Department of High Latitude Agriculture. Rowell has been with SNRAS for nine years.

UAF HR reminds employees that supervisor elective credit can be received for any of the UA approved non-credit courses or CPM courses by completing the credit transfer request form.

The University Women’s Association is seeking volunteers to help with its 2009 Spring Recycle Sale Saturday, March 28. For more information contact Monica Owens at 474-6360 or fywoc@uaf.edu.

Events

John Walsh, IARC, will speak about climate change and tourism in Alaska during a statewide teleconference Tuesday, Feb.10 at 10 a.m. The program is sponsored by the Alaska Center for Climate Assessment and Policy. For more information call 474-7878.

FAFSA Frenzy, the campaign to highlight Financial Aid Awareness Month, is underway. Events to help students learn about financial aid are taking place throughout the state during the month of February. UAF events include Financial Aid 101 Tuesday, Feb. 10 from 1 – 2 p.m. in 301 Rasmuson Library and Wednesday, Feb. 11 from 6 – 8 p.m. at the TVC Center; and Completing Your FAFSA Thursday, Feb. 12 from 1 – 2 p.m. in 301 Rasmuson Library.  For more information contact UAF Financial Aid at 474-7256.

The 2009 Science for Alaska Lecture Series  takes place Tuesdays at 7 p.m. in the Westmark Gold Room. “Out of the Blues: Shaking Off Seasonal Affective Disorder” by Suzanne Womack Strisik, UAA, takes place Feb. 10 and “Frosty Feathers: Avian Tales of Winter Survival” by Susan Sharbaugh, Alaska Bird Observatory, takes place Feb. 17.

The UA Geography Program and the Alaska World Affairs Council present “An Overview of U.S. – Latin America Relations at the Outset of the Obama Administration” by John R. Hamilton, former ambassador to Guatemala and Peru, Wednesday, Feb. 11 at 7 p.m. in the Salisbury Theatre. For more information call 474-7494.

Music at One, free recitals by UAF music students, take place throughout the semester on Thursdays from 1 – 2 p.m. in Davis Concert Hall. The next recital will be Thursday, Feb. 12. Admission is free. For more information call 474-7555.

The UAF Curling Club will host a pre-hockey game gumbo dinner Friday, Feb. 13 from 5:30 – 9 p.m. at the Fairbanks Curling Club as a fundraiser for the Yukon Quest. Dinner is $10 a plate.

The Alaska Skijoring And Pulk Association will be hosting a skijor race on the UAF West Ridge Trails on Sunday, Feb. 15 from 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m.  The event will include 4- and 8-mile races with skiers being pulled by up to 3 dogs.  Start and finish will be adjacent to the parking lot on the North side of the IARC building.

The UAF Alumni Association is hosting its 7th annual Wine Tasting and Silent Auction Saturday, Feb. 28 at 6 p.m. in the Wood Center Pub. Tickets are $25 in advance and available online, at the Wood Center Front Desk or at the Alumni office, 201 Constitution Hall. For more information call 474-7081.

The 25th Lowell Wakefield Fisheries Symposium Biology and Management of Exploited Crab Populations Under Climate Change, takes place Tuesday – Friday, March 10 – 13 in Anchorage. Alaska Sea Grant is a key sponsor of the symposium.

Grants and Awards

Cooperative Extension Service received a $100,000 gift from an anonymous donor.

Three SFOS graduate students won prizes for outstanding poster or oral presentations at the 2009 Alaska Marine Science Symposium held in Anchorage in January. Mayumi Arimitsu won the best M.S. student poster award, Markus Janout won for best oral presentation by a Ph. D. student and Nathan Stewart won for best Ph. D student poster award.

UAF’s Center for Alaska Native Health Research
will receive $396,806 from a $1 million IPY grant from the National Science Foundation to work with other universities to study indigenous teen resilience.

New York Life pledged $150,000 for each of the next three years to fund scholarships and recruitment for the Alaska Summer Research Academy and Rural Alaska Honors Institute as well as other support including an internship and college scholarship for RAHI alumni.

Golden North Rebekah Lodge members gave $50,000 to endow scholarships for students in CLA.
 
The estate of alumnus Nathan Gerson donated $81,000 to endow scholarships for students who have overcome great adversity in their lives. This brings the total amount of gifts from the estate to over $2.1 million.

The Esther Louise Largen Living Trust gave more than $385,000 to fund nursing students through the Allied Health program at TVC.

Flint Hills Resources gave $110,000 to enhance the Alaska Summer Research Academy, Athletics, CEM, SOM and TVC.




 

Nanook women’s basketball takes on Central Washington Thursday, Feb. 12 at 7 p.m. and Western Washington Saturday, Feb. 14 at 5:15 p.m. in the Patty Center gym.

The Nanook rifle team takes on Citadel Saturday – Sunday, Feb. 14 – 15 at 9 a.m. in the E.F. Horton Rifle Range in the Patty Center.

Nanook men’s basketball faces off with Montana State Billings Saturday, Feb. 14 at 7:30 p.m. in the Patty Center gym.

The Alaska Nanook athletic events scores from last week are: Home Games – men’s basketball vs Seattle Pacific, 87-96, and vs Western Washington, 92-99;. Away games – women’s basketball vs UAA, 43-71.
