Grace Schaible was awarded the Medal for Excellence by University of Alaska President Hamilton. The award recognizes individuals who have exhibited unwavering dedication, far beyond the ordinary, to the university.
Chancellor Brian Rogers will host the first of two campus forums Friday, Feb. 20 from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. in the Wood Center multilevel lounge. The second is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 27 from 3:30 – 5 p.m. in Schaible Auditorium. The forums are designed to provide opportunities for staff, faculty and students to discuss issues with Rogers. Marge Thompson, Rasmuson Library Digital Photographic Services, had two photos accepted in the juried show “Patterns of Influence” on display in the Bear Gallery at Pioneer Park through the month of February.
Michele Hebert, CES, had her poster Alaska Invasive Species Working Group accepted for the sixth International Integrated Pest Management Symposium being held March 24 – 26 in Portland, Ore.
UA Press recently published two books: The Sea Woman: Sedna in Inuit Shamanism and Art in the Eastern Arctic by Frederic Laugrand and Jarich Oosten; and The Aleutian Islands of Alaska: Living on the Edge edited by Kenneth F. Wilson and Jeff Richardson.

FAFSA Frenzy, the campaign to highlight Financial Aid Awareness Month, has events scheduled to help students learn about financial aid throughout the state during the month of February. The 2009 Science for Alaska Lecture Series takes place Tuesdays at 7 p.m. in the Westmark Gold Room. “Frosty Feathers: Avian Tales of Winter Survival” by Susan Sharbaugh, Alaska Bird Observatory, takes place Feb. 17 and “Volcano Detectives: Locating, Predicting and Avoiding Ash Clouds” by Peter Webley, ARSC and GI, takes place Feb. 24.

CEM hosts the annual engineering open house in the Duckering Building from 11 a.m.- 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21. As part of engineering week activities the high school state robotics championships will take place 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. in the Wood Center Carol Brown ballroom. A free shuttle will run from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. between the Nenana parking lot and Career Tech Expo 2009 at the Hutchison Institute of Technology, the Duckering Building and the Wood Center. The fourth annual Career Tech Expo will take place Saturday, Feb. 21 from 11 a.m.- 2 p.m. at the James T. Hutchison Institute of Technology. The expo, sponsored by TVC, Fairbanks North Star Borough School District and the Alaska Department of Labor, showcases educational and career opportunities available in technical fields. TVC and Hutchison High School shops and labs will be open, and program faculty and employers from around the state will be on hand. A free shuttle will run from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. between the Nenana parking lot and the expo, the CEM open house and the robotics competition. The UAF Marine Advisory Program received a $100,000 donation from Princess Tours. The gift will provide salary and administrative support for MAP agents in several Alaska coastal communities over the next three years.

The Alaska Nanook swim team was named a Division II Academic All-American team by the College Swim Coaches Association of America. This is the seventh consecutive semester the team has earned the honor. To qualify for the award a team must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0.
Alaska Nanook hockey takes on Ferris State Friday, Feb. 20 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 21 at 5 p.m. at the Carlson Center. The Saturday game will be televised.
The Alaska Nanook athletic events scores from last week are: Home Games – women’s basketball vs Central Washington, 85-89, and vs Western Washington, 48-81; men’s basketball vs Montana State-Billings, 80-79. Away games – hockey vs Western Michigan, 0-3 and 4-3.
