The AFES Palmer Research Laboratory was renamed Kerttula Hall in a dedication ceremony Aug. 29. The name change is in honor of Sen. Jay Kerttula, Alaska’s longest-serving legislator and a longtime advocate for agricultural research in Alaska.
The spring 2009 academic calendar has been changed to better serve students. Registration and fee payment for fall 2009 will begin April 6, SpringFest takes place April 24 and residence halls will close at noon on Monday, May 11. For more information call 6300.
The Alaska Sea Grant Marine Advisory Program is offering The Business of Fish, a class to help Alaska’s commercial fishermen learn more about business management. Andres Lopez recently joined the UA Museum of the North as curator of ichthyology. Lopez has a joint appointment with the museum and SFOS.
Cody Rogers was named the interim assistant director of student activities.
Peter Schweitzer, Alaska EPSCoR and GI, and Anne Sudkamp, Alaska EPSCoR, were elected to the Council of the International Arctic Social Sciences Association in August.

Joern Thiede presents the Chapman Chair lecture “Paleoenvironments of the late Quaternary Arctic Ocean” Sept. 10 at 4 p.m. Theide will also present “Transition from the Greenhouse to the Ice-House Arctic Ocean” Sept. 12 at 3:30 p.m., as part of the Geology and Geophysics seminar series, co-sponsored by the Chapman Chair. Both lectures will be held in 214 Elvey.
Amy Horstman presents her senior voice recital Sept. 11 at 8 p.m. in the Davis Concert Hall. Admission is free.

The Center for Global Change and Arctic System Research, IARC and the Cooperative Institute for Alaska Research presented the 2008 Global Change Student Grant competition awards to Laura Brosius, Stacey Fritz, Michael Golub, Matthew Klick, Michel dos Santos Mesquita, Grant Shimer and Adam Watson.

Anna Coulter and Theresia Schnurr, Alaska Nanooks cross country, were named co-runners of the week by the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. This is the second year Coulter was named runner of the week after the first races of the season.
