UAF's new Grapevine website is designed to dispel rumors, clarify misconceptions and clear up misunderstandings about UAF topics of a general nature. If you want to find out if something you’ve heard is true, submit your rumor and find out.

UA Employee’s education benefit now includes waived fees for up to six non-credit courses per year from the UA-approved list. This education benefit is only for the employee, not dependents. For more information contact Statewide Human Resources at 8200.

A team from the UA Geography Program and Google’s Geo Education program traveled to Barrow, Kotzebue and Nome Sept. 16 – 19 to demonstrate technology that enables students and teachers to explore and create Alaska content within Google Earth.

TVC hired two new term assistant professors, Gary Thomerson in automotive technology and Thane Magelky in construction management and drafting.

Maggie Griscavage, Grants and Contracts, was appointed secretary-elect of the western region of the National Council of University Research Administrators. She will also serve as an officer on the Regional Advisory Committee.

The WIN for Alaska program, UA’s wellness partner, will be offering UAF faculty and staff individual health planning sessions beginning Oct. 13, registration begins Oct. 1. The goal of the program is to provide the tools needed to make good health decisions.

The UA Foundation is accepting applications for privately funded scholarships for the 2009 – 2010 academic year. Applications are due by Feb. 16, 2009.

The Alaska Center for Climate Assessment and Policy presents Jeff Short, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, during a statewide teleconference to discuss carbon dioxide emissions and their effects on ocean acidification Tuesday, Sept. 23 at 10 a.m. The focus of the teleconference will be on the effects on marine life in coastal waters of Alaska. The Northern Leadership Center presents “Leading in Difficult Times,” a lecture by Jeffrey Pfeffer Tuesday, Sept. 23 at 7 p.m. in Schaible Auditorium. Admission is free.

The UA Museum of the North is hosting the IPY lecture “Are We What We Eat?” by Todd O’Hara Tuesday, Sept. 23 at 7 p.m. For more information call 7505.

IARC is hosting an open house to celebrate its 10th anniversary Friday, Sept. 26 from noon – 2 p.m. The new IARC logo will be unveiled, along with a reception and tour.

Starvation Gulch takes place Friday – Saturday, Sept. 26 – 27. Come out and enjoy the live music, a barbeque and the car bash. The bonfires will be lit Saturday, Sept. 27 at 10 p.m. in Taku Parking Lot. For more information call 6026.

The Arctic Chamber Orchestra, featuring Eduard Zilberkant as conductor and soloist, presents a concert Sunday, Sept. 28 at 4 p.m. in the Davis Concert Hall. Tickets are $30. A free pre-concert lecture takes place at 3 p.m. For more information call 5733.

Career Services is hosting the Law School Consortium Wednesday, Sept. 24 from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. in Wood Center. Representatives from 15 different law schools will be on hand to answer questions about careers in law.

Grants and Awards

Gary Laursen, CNSM; Neil Davis, professor emeritus; and Carla Browning, Marketing and Communications, were honored by the American Association for the Advancement of Science Arctic Division and the Alaska Chapter of Sigma Xi for contributions to arctic science research. Laursen was recognized for his service to secondary school science, technology, engineering and mathematics students. Davis was honored for his support of arctic science and excellence in bringing science to the public. Browning was recognized for her work communicating arctic science to the public.

Steve Bouta and Tamara Martz
, UA Museum of the North, were awarded funds to attend the joint Museums Alaska and Western Museums Association September meeting in Anchorage. Bouta was awarded the Museums Alaska Travel Scholarship and Martz received the Western Museums Association Wanda Chin Professional Development Support Fund award.

The University Women’s Association gave $1000 to the UAF TVC Bunnell House Early Childhood Lab School toward the purchase of an outdoor storage unit.




The Nanook hockey team’s blue vs. gold game takes place Friday, Sept. 26 at 6 p.m. The team faces the U.S. National Under 18 team Saturday, Sept. 27 at 7 p.m. Both games will be held in the Patty Center ice arena.

The Alaska Nanook rifle team faces off with the University of Texas at El Paso Saturday – Sunday, Sept. 27 – 28 at 9 a.m. in the E.F. Horton rifle range.

Nanook volleyball takes on UAA Saturday, Sept. 27 at 3 p.m. in the Patty Center gym.
