Interim Chancellor Rogers will present his vision for UAF at Convocation 2008 Sept. 16 at 1 p.m. in Davis Concert Hall. An ice cream social will follow in the Regents' Great Hall. For more information call 7581.

UAF’s PolarExpress card now serves as a bus pass on all borough bus routes thanks to a new partnership between UAF and the Fairbanks North Star Borough. The program began Sept. 2.

Jerry Evans is the new director of radio programming and production at KUAC FM. Evans, a longtime local broadcaster, got his start at KUAC TV as an assistant producer for television in 1982. He begins his new duties Sept. 8.

Cara Hollingsworth is the new director of student leadership development.

Frank Chythlook is the newest RSS advisor. Chythlook previously served at UAF with the Interior-Aleutians Campus.

The UAF Weekly Science Calendar, sponsored by the Center for Global Change and Arctic System Research, has resumed regular publication for the academic year. Send information to cgc@iarc.uaf.edu by noon on Wednesday the week before your event. For more information call 5818.

Emily Schwing’s story on the Pebble Mine Project and the clean water ballot initiative was broadcast on National Public Radio’s Marketplace program. Schwing, a journalism major, reported the story in conjunction with Joel Shurkin’s science writing class. Shurkin was UAF’s first year-long Snedden Chair. Schwing will participate in the Council for the Advancement of Science Writing’s meeting in October.

The UA Museum of the North’s museum education program is seeking volunteers to be museum docents. Docents volunteer for three hours per week for a semester. For more information call 5360.

KUAC FM is seeking volunteers to answer phones and take pledges during the fall fundraiser Oct. 18 – 26. For more information call 1890 or e-mail volunteers@kuac.org.
 




Events

ARSC provides free training and workshops for new and current users of high-performance computing resources. The first of a series of classes in core skills for computational science takes place Sept. 4 from 9:15 – 11:15 a.m. in WRRB 009. For more information contact Tom Logan at logan@arsc.edu.

The RSS Blast-Off celebration to welcome fall semester students takes place Sept. 4 at 5 p.m. in the RSS Gathering Room, 207 Brooks. The campus community is invited to join in the fun.

CANHR, University Advancement, Alaska INBRE, CNSM and Alaska EPSCoR present “The Secret History of the War on Cancer,” a lecture by Devra Lee Davis, University of Pittsburg, Sept. 4 at 7 p.m. in Schaible Auditorium. It is free and open to the public. It will also be webcast at the CANHR website.

Alaska Sea Grant is hosting a back to school sale Sept. 5 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. in Wood Center. The award-winning 2009 Alaska Coastal Calendar will be on sale for $10.

The ANLC, Linguistics and Anthropology joint colloquium presents “Places, Property and People: Revisiting the Columbia Plateau from an Australian Perspective,” a lecture by Bruce Rigsby Sept. 5 at 3:30 p.m. in 304 Eielson.

The Northern Leadership Center offers a two-day facilitation workshop Sept. 12 – 13. There is a $30 fee for materials and lunch. For more information contact fynlc@uaf.edu.

Grants and Awards

The CRCD Rural Health Program was awarded the Rural Alaska Health Education Training Project three-year grant and will receive about $500,000 each of the three years. The goal is to strengthen partnerships between the job centers and each of the rural campuses.




The Auto Service Company Nanook Classic volleyball tournament takes place Sept. 5 – 6. All games are held in the Patty Center gym.

The Alaska Nanooks cross country intersquad meet will be held Sept. 6 at 11 a.m. at Ester Dome.
