The UAF Police Department reminds everyone to be mindful of different types of traffic when traveling on campus. With the start of classes, motor vehicle, bicycle and pedestrian traffic has increased.

The Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities accredited UAF’s new associate of science degree clearing the way for students to enroll in the program. NWCCU also approved the UAF Tech Prep agreement with the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District.

The WIN for Alaska program, UA’s wellness partner, will be offering UAF faculty and staff individual health planning sessions beginning Oct. 13. The goal of the program is to provide the tools needed to make good health decisions.

Physical therapy services provided by Denise Jerome are available on campus in 106 SRC. For more information call 452-3165.

The last day to receive a 50 percent refund on tuition when dropping a course is Sept. 19.

Employee notice, protection for whistleblowers: Any employee may in good faith report to testify before a public agency concerning: a violation of federal, state or local law; a danger to public health or safety; gross mismanagement; a substantial waste of funds or clear abuse of authority; or a matter under investigation by the state. Employee protections and obligations regarding reports of these matters of public concern are fully stated in Alaska statutes 39.90.100 through 39.90.150, which are available for review at UAF University Relations, 201 Eielson Building.

UAF’s Model UN and Pi Sigma Alpha are hosting a panel on careers in intergovernmental organizations Sept. 16 from 1 – 2:30 p.m. in Wood Center conference room B followed by a roundtable discussion on international labor issues at 6 p.m. in the Wood Center multilevel lounge. The 2008 Equinox Marathon takes place Sept. 20 beginning at 8 a.m. at the Patty Center. For more information or to register contact Running Club North at 322-8554.

The Northern Leadership Center presents “Leading in Difficult Times,” a lecture by Jeffrey Pfeffer Sept. 23 at 7 p.m. in Schaible Auditorium. Admission is free and all are welcome.

The UA Museum of the North is hosting the IPY lecture “Are We What We Eat?” by Todd O’Hara Sept. 23 at 7 p.m. For more information call 7505.

Career Services is hosting the Law School Consortium Sept. 24 from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. in Wood Center. Representatives from 15 different law schools will be on hand to answer questions about careers in law.

EPSCoR Integration Core is hosting the Complexity Science: Agent-Based Models and the New Paradigm of Uncertainty workshop Sept. 24 – 26 at UAA. Attendance is free, but registration is required. The Saturday Family Program Rocket Science, presented by the UA Museum of the North, takes place Sept. 27 at 9 a.m. Children aged 7 – 12, accompanied by an adult, will learn about rocket mechanics and flight and then build and launch their own rocket. The UA Museum of the North has new fall/winter hours. Effective Sept. 16 the museum will be open Monday – Saturday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. and closed on Sunday. For more information call 7505.

Grants and Awards

The Ruth Lister Scholarship fund has reached $106,000 through donations from Lister’s family and friends since her death in December 2003.

UAF departments are among a consortium of state marine research organization that received a $2.5 million grant from the National Science Foundation to establish Alaska as a Center for Ocean Science Education Excellence.

The UA Museum of the North received a 2008 American Architecture Award from the Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design, the European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies and Metropolitan Arts Press Ltd. This is the third architecture award the museum has won since opening the new building in 2005.




Alaska Nanook volleyball takes on Seattle Pacific University Sept. 18 and Northwest Nazarene University Sept. 20. Both games are at 7 p.m. in the Patty Center gym.

Nov. 14, 2008: Abstracts for oral or poster presentations for the 25th Lowell Wakefield Fisheries Symposium: Biology and Management of Exploited Crab Populations under Climate Change are due.

Nov. 15, 2008: Abstracts for A Sustainable Future: Fish Processing Byproducts, a symposium being held Feb. 25 – 26, 2009 in Portland, Ore., are due. The symposium is organized by Alaska Sea Grant, the Alaska Fisheries Development Association, the UAF Fishery Industrial Technology Center and the U.S.D.A Agricultural Research Service.
