Paul Layer, associate dean of CNSM, will serve as interim dean of CNSM beginning Feb. 1, 2009. Layer will take over for Dean Joan Braddock who is retiring at the end of January. Braddock will be continuing her association with the university as half-time interim director of the UA Press.

Judyth Wier, associate vice chancellor for development, will be leaving UAF Nov. 30 to become the executive director of advancement for the Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine in Baton Rouge, La.

Lawrence Duffy
, CNSM and interim dean of the Graduate School, was elected a Science Education for New Civic Engagements and Responsibilities Leadership Fellow by the National Center for Science and Civic Engagement.

Nanook News is a weekly news program about UAF published on YouTube by the Department of Journalism. The show features student anchors Alexis Fernandez and Hollie Seiler.

Nicole Mölders, CNSM, has been re-elected as one of the nine members of the University Corporation of Atmospheric Research’s nominating committee. Mölders was also elected to a 3-year term on UCAR’s membership committee.

UAF and Statewide faculty, staff and students will begin using Google Applications for Education for e-mail and other core information technology services through a phased-in approach over this academic year. Students will be invited to opt in this month. The change will provide cost savings, eliminate redundancies and allow for greater collaboration and sharing of information. Once converted, campus e-mail addresses will end with alaska.edu. The Google package includes access to Gmail, Google calendar, Google Talk, Google Docs and Google Sites. UAF computer science students are accepting proposals for software design projects. Students have completed more than 59 successful projects in the last 20 years. The projects allow students to gain real-world experience building customized software. Proposals are due 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31. For more information contact 474-2777 or fycsci@uaf.edu.

Jessica Guritz, a UAF senior, worked as an integrated pest management technician this summer in a joint project for CES and the U.S. Forest Service. Guritz mapped invasive plants found on the UAF campus and used a series of aerial photos to show the locations and densities of each species. Her report includes recommendations for dealing with each problem species.

Julie Smith, interim director of the Alaska Rural Behavioral Health Training Academy, was interviewed in the September 2008 edition of Alaska Rural Health Notes about the academy and her background.

Larry Roberts, CRCD, authored “Work-Based Learning and the Wisdom of Elders” that appeared in the July 2008 edition of Behavioral Healthcare. The article discusses the unique challenges facing behavior health care services in Alaska and what UAF is doing to address these challenges.

The Midnight Sun Visiting Writers series presents author Patricia Hampl reading her poetry and nonfiction work Friday Oct. 24 at 7 p.m. at the UA Museum of the North. Admission is free.

The University Women’s Association’s Recycle Sale takes place Saturday, Oct. 25 from noon – 2 p.m. in the Wood Center Carol Brown Ballroom. For more information call 474-6360.

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry is celebrating the American Chemical Society’s National Chemistry Week Saturday, Oct. 25 from 1 – 3 p.m. in the Reichardt Building. Displays and hands-on demonstrations will focus on research underway in the department.

Zombie Walk, part of the World Zombie Day fight to end world hunger, takes place Sunday, Oct. 26 from 3 – 6 p.m. Dress up as a zombie and walk from the West Ridge parking lot to Wood Center, then enjoy the free 1969 movie Night of the Living Dead. Bring canned food donations to help the fight against hunger.

The Fairbanks Symphony Orchestra, with guest pianist Alexander Kobrin, presents a concert Sunday, Oct. 26 at 4 p.m. in the Davis Concert Hall. Tickets are $30 for adults, $25 for seniors and military, and $10 for students and children. For more information call 474-5733.

The English Department presents the Humanities Research Colloquium “Narayan’s Allotropic Fare: The Special Gloss of A Tigre for Malgudi” by Joseph Dupras, Wednesday, Oct. 29 at 11:40 a.m. in the Alumni Lounge.

The UAF Badminton Association is hosting badminton matches on Sundays at 3 p.m. and Tuesdays at 7 p.m. in the Patty Center. You must bring a clean pair of shoes and pay the user fee or use your PolarExpress card. For more information contact fbsmash@uaf.edu.

Grants and Awards

Matthew Balazs, a UAF senior, has been named the UA Geography Program’s first Maxwell Scholar. The Dr. Earl Maxwell Scholarship was created to recognize outstanding UAF geography students.




 

Nanook rifle shoots it out with the University of Kentucky Friday, Oct. 24 and the University of Nebraska Sunday, Oct. 26. Both matches will be held at 9 a.m. in the E.F. Horton Rifle Range in Patty Center.

Nanook women’s swimming faces off with Drury University Friday, Oct. 24 at 5 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 25 at noon in the Patty Center Pool.

Nanook hockey faces off with Bowling Green Friday, Oct. 24 and Saturday, Oct. 25 at 7 p.m. in the Carlson Center. The Nanooks won the Kendall Classic hockey tournament held in Anchorage Oct. 10 – 11. Brandon Knelsen was named to the classics all-tournament team and Dion Knelsen was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player. Dion Knelsen was also named the Central Collegiate Hockey Association Offensive Player of the Week.

Nanook women’s volleyball player Korlyn Bolster was named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Player of the Week for Oct. 6 – 12.

The Alaska Nanook athletic events scores from last week are: Home games – Brice Alaska Goal Rush: tournament winner - UAA, hockey vs Mercyhurst, 5-0, and vs Maine, 0-2; Away games – women's volleyball vs UAA, 3-2.
