Chancellor Rogers and President Hamilton approved renaming the Calypso Orchid Trail and Nature Walk, one of the north campus trails, the Viereck Nature Trail in honor of Les and Teri Viereck.

Chien-Lu Ping, SNRAS, published research in the Nature Geoscience and Scientific American websites showing frozen arctic soil contains nearly twice the previously estimated levels of greenhouse-gas-producing organic material.
John Chappelow, postdoctoral fellow with ARSC, and Robert Herrick, GI, were featured in the "Research Highlights" column in the Oct. 2 issue of Nature magazine. The column focused on research that hypothesized a pair of elongated craters on the surface of Mars was probably caused by a small moonlet which entered the planet's atmosphere, fractured and landed in two pieces on the surface.
Bryr Lundington, CLA graduate student, wrote the feature article “Pioneer of the Alaska Highway” published in the October 2008 issue of Alaska Magazine.
October is National Fire Prevention Month. Employees are encouraged to assess their work areas for fire hazards and familiarize themselves with their department’s emergency procedures. In a fire, activate the nearest fire alarm pull station and call 911; evacuate the building and go to your predetermined meeting location; count your team members; stay there until members are accounted for; do not enter the building until emergency personnel say it’s safe to do so. UAF has been transitioning to a web content management system, Roxen, since early this year. It is available to UAF departments. Eventually the old UAF Apache web server will be retired, but that won't occur until all web pages and content have been converted to web content management. The Fishery Industrial Technology Center, with assistance from CES, is looking for volunteers to taste test canned salmon Monday – Friday, Oct. 13 – 17 from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. in Wood Center Conference Rooms C and D. The Alaska Center for Climate Assessment and Policy presents a teleconference by Jeffrey Demain Tuesday, Oct. 14 at 10 a.m. Demain will discuss the distribution of venomous insects and possible relationships between climate change and increased insect stings. The UA Museum of the North is hosting a hunting and trapping exhibit expo Saturday, Oct. 18 from noon – 5 p.m. Watch snowshoe-making, beadworking and skin-sewing demonstrations, visit with local experts, and learn about skinning and fur handling, pet safety on traplines and more.
