The Alaska Nanook rifle team was honored by President Bush at the White House Wednesday, Nov. 12 for winning the NCAA rifle championship. This is the team’s second trip to the White House to be honored with other NCAA national champions.
The Center for Distance Education has joined the OpenCourseWare Consortium and will contribute 10 courses over the next two years. The consortium is a partnership of more than 200 higher education institutions worldwide who make courses and course materials available online free to the public.

The UAF Police Department’s main line phone number has changed to 474-7721. The old number, 474-6200, will be disconnected soon. Please change all references from the old to the new number.
SFOS faculty, staff and students in Juneau are moving into the new Lena Point Fisheries Facility. The facility is located with the NOAA Ted Stevens Marine Research Institute.
Bruce Bustamante, vice president of community and public affairs for Princess Tours, has joined the Alaska Sea Grant College Program Advisory Committee. The committee guides the program’s statewide mission of research, education and Marine Advisory Program service. The committee will hold its annual meeting Thursday – Friday, Nov. 21 – 22 in Anchorage.
Joy Morrison, director of faculty development, was elected to the National Board of the Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education.
Tom Weingartner, SFOS, was a guest lecturer as part of the Chapman Lecture Series at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in early November.
John Yarie and Jingjing Liang, both SNRAS, attended the Society of American Foresters 2008 annual convention Nov. 5 – 9 in Reno, Nev., where Liang presented a seminar, Cooperative Alaska Forest Inventory: A Key to Study Northern Forests of Alaska.
The Office of Information Technology offers the UAF Tech Refresh program to assist UAF departments with the purchase of new computers. Both PC and Macintosh computers qualify for the program. For more information call 474-6288.

UAF’s Alaska Center for Energy and Power is hosting a free public lecture on hydropower Monday, Nov. 17 at 6:30 p.m. at the Noel Wien Library. The lecture will include information on the Susitna Hydro Project, in-river power generation for rural Alaska and how climate change affects renewable energy projects. Nanook Traditions' International Education Week is Monday – Friday, Nov. 17 – 21. Theatre UAF presents The Laramie Project, by Moises Kaufman and members of the Tectonic Theatre Project, directed by Carrie Baker Friday Nov. 21 at 8:15 p.m., Saturday Nov. 22 at 2 p.m. and 8:15 p.m., and Sunday Nov. 23 at 2 p.m. in the Salisbury Theatre. A panel discussion, “Live and Let Live: The Local Context of The Laramie Project,” will take place following the 2 p.m. matinee performance Saturday, Nov. 22. The Interior-Aleutians Campus is among 21 institutions nationwide to win competitive grants from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development for 2008. IAC was awarded a $799,965 HUD Alaska Native/Native Hawaiian Institutions Assisting Communities grant to work with the Interior Regional Housing Authority and the CCHRC to renovate the Gaalee’ya Spirit Camp.
Tom Trainor, CNSM, was awarded the 2009 Mineralogical Society of America Award. The award recognizes outstanding published contributions to the science of mineralogy by individuals near the beginning of their professional careers.
Gretchen Gordon, KUAC, was honored by the Association of Fundraising Professionals Alaska Chapter for her contributions to Alaska’s communities through her philanthropic efforts at its 21st annual Alaska Philanthropy Day awards luncheon in Anchorage Nov. 14.
Lisa South, graduate student in fisheries, received the Best Student Poster award at the 2008 Annual Alaska Chapter of the American Fisheries Society meeting for her poster on using geographic information systems to identify potential spawning habitat for chum salmon in the Tanana River.
Kristen Shake, a senior geography student, received a $2,300 Flint Hills Resources undergraduate research award for her work in oceanography.
