UAF’s new online textbook bookstore opens today, Dec. 1. Textbook sales are now exclusively online. Students are encouraged to register early to get the courses they want and their book lists in advance of the semester start. Craig Gerlach, CLA, Gary Kofinas, AFES, and graduate students Philip Loring and Archana Bali discuss effects of climate change and rising energy costs on food supply in northern communities in two articles authored by Edward Lempinen published in Science.

Gaius Shaver, Woods Hole Marine Biological Laboratory, is serving as a visiting scholar at IAB for the 2008 – 2009 academic year. Shaver’s work has includes more than 20 years as a co-principle investigator of the Arctic Long Term Ecological Research project at the IAB Toolik Field Station.

The Art Department will host Gwendolyn Magee as an artist-in-residence for the spring 2009 semester. Magee is a 2007 United States Artist Fellow. Tanya Aguiñiga, who participated in the artist-in-residence program through the UAF Native Arts Center, recently held a show in the Reform Gallery in Los Angeles that featured three art works she created while at UAF. Aguiñiga was a 2006 United States Artist Fellow. The artist-in-residence program is supported by a grant from the Rasmuson Foundation.

The UA Press has recently released a number of new titles, first-time paperback editions, and popular reprints. In addition to the Press’s traditional topics of Alaska history, culture, and science, they have made their first foray into publishing Alaska poetry. New books include: Rising and the Rain by John Straley, When the Laughing Stopped – The Strange, Sad Death of Will Rogers by John Evangelist Walsh, Front Street, Kotzebue by Dennis Witmer, and Bear Wrangler – Memoirs of an Alaska Pioneer Biologist by Will Troyer. The GI Map Office offers maps and posters for sale, including topographic maps of Alaska and Canada, trail maps, nautical charts, National Geographic maps and posters, circumpolar and geologic maps, and a poster of a satellite photo of Fairbanks. Office hours are Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., at 204 Akasofu Building. For more information call 474-6960 .

The Registrar’s Office service counter hours in Signers’ Hall are 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m., effective Monday, Dec. 1.

Events

Ensemble 64.8 and percussionist Bob Becker present a concert at 8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 1 in Davis Concert Hall. Tickets are $10. For more information call 474-7555.

ARSC provides free training and workshops for new and current users of high-performance computing resources. The next course in the core skills for computational science series, Introduction to Pingo – Cray XT5 system, takes place Tuesday, Dec. 2 from 9:15 – 11:15 a.m. in WRRB 009. The Humanities Research Colloquium presents Richard Carr, CLA, giving a talk, "The Founding of Australia:  Peter Carey's Oscar and Lucinda – with Help from Sir Walter Scott and James Fenimore Cooper, " Tuesday, Dec. 2 at 1 p.m. in 405 Gruening.

Music at One, free recitals by UAF music students, take place throughout the semester on Thursdays from 1 – 2 p.m. in Davis Concert Hall. The next recital will be Thursday, Dec. 4. Admission is free. For more information call 474-7555.

The Alaska History Store will be one of the vendors at the Georgeson Botanical Garden Holiday Bazaar Friday, Dec. 5 from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. in the Wood Center. Photographic reprints, note cards, calendars and other items will be for sale. The Alaska History Store is part of Digital Photographic Services, located in 334 Rasmuson Library. It is generally open 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. weekdays and has a selection of prints and other items available for sale. For more information call 474-6344.

The Anthropology Colloquium series presents “Lives in the Ruins of the Past: A Re-Settlement History of Chukotka’s East Coast” a lecture by Tobias Holzlehner, CLA, Friday, Dec. 5 at 3:30 p.m in 304 Eielson. For more information call 474-7288.

Theatre UAF is hosting auditions for the spring semester’s performances of Winter Shorts Saturday, Dec. 6 at 10 a.m. in Salisbury Theatre. For more information call 474-6590.

The Annual Holiday Open House and Book Sale, hosted by Alaska Sea Grant, UA Press, and UAF Marketing and Communications, takes place Thursday, Dec. 11 from 2 – 6 p.m. on the second floor of the Wells Fargo Building.

Tom Moran, Alaska EPSCoR, is the Fall 2008 Exceptional Student Employee Award recipient. The award is presented by Career Services.




 

The Alaska Nanook athletic events scores from last week are: Home games – women’s basketball, Mt. McKinley Bank North Star Invitational – vs Hawaii Pacific, 61-49, vs Holy Family, 60-59, vs University of California San Diego, 56-67; hockey vs Lake Superior State, 4-1 and 1-1.




 

Deadlines

Dec. 15, 2008: Abstracts for INRA’s Lessons from Continuity and Change in the Fourth International Polar Year symposium are due. The symposium takes place March 4 – 7, 2009 at UAF. Early registration is available through Dec. 31.
