Vice Chancellor for Research Buck Sharpton was named by President Bush as one of three new members of the U.S. Arctic Research Commission. The commission is responsible for developing an integrated national arctic research policy.

Julie Shalvoy is the new human resource manager for GI. Shalvoy previously served in UAF HR.

Judyth Wier, associate vice chancellor for development, was recertified as a Certified Fund Raising Executive.

Nicole Mölders, CNSM and GI, was appointed a member of the Budget and Finance Committee of the American Geophysical Union for the 2008 – 2010 term.

Richard Collins, GI, was invited as a faculty opponent for a thesis defense by the Department of Chemistry and Atmospheric Science at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden.

Ray RaLonde, along with A.C. Oliveria, B. Himelbloom, C. Crapo, C. Vorholt and Q. Fong, all with SFOS, were authors of "Pacific Oyster Mariculture in Alaska," recently published in World Aquaculture.

Alaska Sea Grant is helping organize the symposium A Sustainable Future: Fish Processing Byproducts Feb. 25 – 26, 2009 in Portland, Ore. The goal of the symposium is to stimulate development of lucrative new products from seafood byproducts. Abstracts are due Nov. 15. ARSC is seeking volunteers to participate in an avatar user study at the Discovery Lab. Data from this study is expected to help advance user interface design in virtual reality applications. The expected time commitment is 30 – 45 minutes and participants must be 18 or older. For more information or to volunteer e-mail webb@arsc.edu.

Most campus offices will be closed Sept. 1 in observance of Labor Day.




Events

TVC is hosting a student registration and open house Aug. 28 from 4:30 – 7 p.m. at the TVC Center at 604 Barnette St.

Rev It Up, the first-year student move-in event hosted by Residence Life begins Aug. 31. Residence Life is seeking volunteers to help welcome new students to UAF. To volunteer or for more information contact Jamie at 1885 or fnjra@uaf.edu.

New Student Orientation takes place Aug. 31 – Sept. 3. Classes begin Sept. 4.

The UA Museum of the North and the Fairbanks Arts Association present "Northern Disclosure," an exhibit of contemporary art from the museum’s collections, running through Aug. 31 in the Bear Gallery in the Alaska Centennial Center for the Arts at Pioneer Park.

The Office of Information Technology hosts training opportunities throughout the year on various subjects including Banner and Roxen. For more information visit the OIT training calendar.

Theatre UAF is holding auditions for its fall productions Sept. 6 at 10 a.m. in the Salisbury Theatre.

Grants and Awards

Gary Laursen, CNSM and IAB, received the 2008 Regional Advisor of the Year award from the Golden Key International Honour Society.

UA received a donation of $30 million in broadband capacity from GCI. The broadband gift spans 10 years and includes a research component. UA and GCI will explore working together on solving connectivity challenges that persist, particularly in rural Alaska.

The Provost’s Office was awarded a two-year, $140,000 National Science Foundation grant to conduct a baseline study of women faculty in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics at UAF.

Jeff Smeenk and Steve Brown, both CES, were honored by the National Association of County Agricultural Agents this summer. Smeenk received the Achievement Award for Excellence in Extension Work. Brown was named a NASA Fellow.

Terry Chapin, IAB, received the Sustainability Science Award from the Ecological Society of America as one of the authors of the paper “Policy Strategies to Address Sustainability of Alaskan Boreal Forests in Response to a Directionally Changing Climate.”




Alaska Nanooks cross country takes on Humboldt State University Aug. 28 at 9 a.m. on the UAF West Ridge trails and Aug. 30 at 9 a.m. on the Birch Hill trails.

Nanooks women’s volleyball faces the University of Central Missouri Aug. 29 – 30 at 7 p.m. in the Patty Center Gym.




Deadlines

Aug. 29, 2008: Registration for departments to participate in the UAF Student Job Fair are due. The fair takes place Sept. 10 – 11 from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. in Wood Center. For more information call Career Services at 7596.

Sept. 3, 2008: Application information for the Academic Leadership Institute is due. Provost Emeritus Reichardt is hosting the institute throughout the 2008 - 2009 academic year. To apply, send an e-mail to Doris Nichols at fndmn@uaf.edu with a statement of why you want to participate, that you agree to do the reading required and that you will make every effort to attend the sessions.
