Accreditation Reaffirmed
Continuing a tradition that began in 1934 when the Alaska Agricultural College and School of Mines was first accredited, UAF's accreditation has been reaffirmed. The Commission on Colleges and Universities of the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges reaffirmed UAF's institutional accreditation in a letter to the chancellor dated Jan. 11, 2002. In that letter the commission reiterated the recommendations and commendations listed in the Evaluation Committee Report and included two additional recommendations.
First, the commission recommended that UAF ensure that all certificate and associate degree programs contain instructional components in the areas of communication, computation and human relations and that these components be clearly defined in our publications (e.g. the catalog). Second, the commission recommended that an assessment of student learning be conducted in all certificate and degree programs. The assessment of the core curriculum, which was a commendation for UAF, was suggested as a model for programs.
After the October site visit, the Evaluation Committee recommended that UAF address space issues, address salary compression, create a faculty and staff handbook, secure and fireproof students records, better integrate CRA into planning and programming and address direct appointments of senior officials.
The commission met in Portland to review the Evaluation Committee's final report on UAF's accreditation. Chancellor Lind, Provost Reichardt and accreditation steering committee co-chairs Dana Thomas and Ron Gatterdam answered questions at a meeting Dec. 13, 2001.
The commission requested that UAF submit a progress report in fall 2003 which addresses the recommendations on the development of a faculty and staff handbook, secure and fireproof student records, related instruction (certificate and associate programs), and assessment of student outcomes for all programs.
