The Sitka District stretches from Sitka, South and East to the Canadian border. The District's population of 33,000 includes the State's fourth (Ketchikan) and fifth (Sitka) largest cities. About 21% of the population is Native although some smaller communities (Kake, Klawock, and Hydaburg) have over 80% Native population. The principal communities within the District includes Sitka, Kake, Petersburg, Ketchikan, Metlakatla (Annette Indian Reservation), Craig, Klawock, Hydaburg, Thorne Bay, Hollis, Coffman Cove, Whale Pass, and a number of smaller villages.
Programming centers on subsistence gardening, horticultural business opportunities, secondary processing of forest resources, natural resource education and leadership development. We serve those groups and individuals who have limited expertise and resources to other sources of technical assistance and education. In some communities our clientele are Master Gardeners, in others it is 4-H Leaders, or school teachers interested in natural resource education opportunities. Other times it will be budding entrepreneurs interested in forest related enterprises.
