Cooperative Extension Service

Delta Junction District

Jarvis Building, PO Box 349, Delta Junction, AK 99737, Phone (907) 895-4215, FAX (907) 895-4210

The Delta office serves the general population along the Alaska Highway from Mile 1370 to Mile 1442 and along the Richardson Highway from Mile 180 to Mile 300. This area includes the communities of Delta Junction, Big Delta, Delta Clearwater, Fort Greely and Dry Creek.

Population estimates for this area are approximately 5,100. Nearly 25% of these residents are transients who are in the United States Armed Forces or work seasonally in the area.

The Delta area is the location of a major commercial agricultural development project by the State of Alaska. Within the last two decades, more than 110,000 acres of state land has been transferred into private ownership. This land is in various stages of development and production. National and international agriculture businesses are experiencing financial difficulty; Delta is no exception. Consequently, management practices must be revised to lower the costs of production as much as possible. Alternative crops and businesses are being investigated as a possible means of economic diversity and survival.
