The University of Alaska - Fairbanks, College of Rural Alaska (CRA) provides grants to classroom teachers, non-formal educators and UAF faculty supporting students in grades 9 - 12 within the service areas of five regional CRA extended campuses (see Eligible School Districts). The Direct Grant to Educators program, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Agriculture provides funding for innovative projects designed to promote the understanding of sound scientific and/or mathematical concepts using phenomena unique to Alaska.

Before developing a grant proposal for this, or any other program, it is important to become familiar with the eligibility requirements and goals of the grant program. This tutorial has been created to help potential applicants develop proposals that meet the criteria of this program as well as enhance their grant writing skills. It is our goal that this tutorial will assist applicants to produce high quality, competitive grant applications.

The tutorial has been divided into two sections. The first section, Program Specifics, includes information on the Direct Grant to Educators program, the Request for Proposal for the current grant cycle, eligible school districts, the screening tools used for project selection and information on submitting a proposal. The second section includes information on basic grant writing with specific references to the requirements of this RFP. For applicants that have submitted proposals to this program in the past, we encourage you to review this section for new information.

We have also included examples of proposals that demonstrate good grant writing techniques as well as address the criteria of this grant program. And finally, we provide contact information for program staff that can assist you in developing your proposal. Good luck to all interested applicants.
