Executive Summary

The Executive Summary succinctly describes all major aspects of the proposed project. This summary becomes the foundation of your proposal as well as the first impression it gives to reviewers. The first impression can be critical to the success of the proposal. Approach this section as a sales document designed to convince the reviewers that this project should be funded.

Four key components that should be included in your Executive Summary:
  • problem - a brief statement of the problem or need
  • solution - a short description of project which will answer the following questions: What will take place? How many will benefit? What grade level(s) are targeted? What subject matter will be addressed (i.e. Science or Mathematics)? How and where will the project take place? How long will it last? Who will do it?
  • funding requirements - an explanation of the amount of funding required for the project completion as well as where you plan to get it (if you need more than you are requesting, explain where the remainder will come from)
  • project leadership - a brief statement of who will be leading this project and their capacity/expertise to do so

Although this section comes first in your proposal, it is best written last. This makes it easier to include all the key points necessary to communicate the objectives of the project. The Executive Summary is limited to 250 words. Please make sure your summary conforms to this restriction.

These are examples of funded mini-grant projects. The RFP requirements have changed since these projects were funded, so there are differences between the past and current RFP applications.
