2004 - 2005 Request for Proposals Abstract

Applications Accepted: Jan. 15, 2004 - March 15, 2004

Before you start this Request For Proposals (RFP) application process, make sure this grant program is right for you. The main focus of the Direct Grant to Educators is to provide grants for secondary classroom teachers, non-formal educators and/or University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) faculty. The grant period is June 2004 - October 2005 funding innovative projects which promote the understanding of science and mathematics through natural resource education (subsistence agriculture) for students in grades 9 - 12. Proposed projects must represent a partnership between educators, school districts and one of the five regional College of Rural Alaska (CRA) extended campuses: Bristol Bay, Chukchi, Interior/Aleutians, Kuskokwim and Northwest Campuses and an eligible school district (see Eligible Schools section of tutorial for a detailed list). Grant funds may be used for transportation, materials, honorariums, substitute teacher pay, and summer assignments and/or overloads for teachers or UAF faculty. The projects should support and be aligned with the Alaska Content Standards for Mathematics and Science and the Alaska Standards for Culturally Responsive Schools.

All funds awarded for projects will be set up on a reimbursable basis and be fiscally managed by the participating school district/agency. Funding is contingent upon final approval from United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). USDA intends this program to address the preparation of rural students for higher education needs within a broadly defined arena of food and agricultural sciences related disciplines. Projects must be designed to promote the understanding of sound scientific and mathematical concepts using phenomena unique to Alaska or their specific region.

The concept of "subsistence agriculture" as defined in this grant allows for studies in animal, fish, and/or plants used in traditional subsistence activities. Students will acquire awareness; baseline data and knowledge about changing numbers, conditions, or contamination of local natural resources used in traditional subsistence activities. Projects directed at changes in the land, water, ice, and weather as it relates to subsistence activities and the acquisition of traditional knowledge and "ways of knowing" practices about natural resources will be considered. Please keep in mind, the USDA does not provide funding for mining education, extraction of minerals, and/or exploration as it does not consider the extraction of minerals to be a "renewable resource."
