Goal:
To promote wonderment and connect people to a greater appreciation
of the forest and its cultural connections with communities.
Supporting Objectives for
the Program:
- Assist students
in developing a community based definition of What Is Forestry.
- Provide students
and teachers with a basic introduction to forestry.
- Empower students
to make informed decisions regarding forestry management issues.
The
Web Exchange:
Students will through the course of the exchange
develop a concept of “what is forestry” through community
participation. To assist with the exchange of information between
Alaska and Kentucky it is recommended that a match-up be
made between an individual class in the two states. These two classes
will as the corresponding partner for shared activities between
the two states. Shared activities through developed units will be
a consistent feature of the year-long program. The design of the
program involves not just conducting the activities identified in
the unit and associated selective cultural activities (visual, audio
(music, poetry) material from each states) but the associated interchange
of these activities with a sister school classroom that will help
students build on the concept of forestry. These other types of
exchanges will include bulletin board exchange (discussion threads
between the students in the two classes) and as scheduled video
exchanges, through a parent site that will enable interested parents
to interact with the program. The teacher’s will also have
a web page of their own with necessary teaching materials and support
material.
The exchange will happen
over the course of the year using all or many of the following units
(each unit could take 2 weeks to a month to do, depending on the
teacher’s schedule). Units are designed as a learning cycle
model and are aligned with core content and Kentucky standards.
Each unit will have a learning cycle (engage, explore, explain,
expand, evaluate) and a culminating project and an associated cultural
activity. |
