Professor of Silviculture, Emeritus

WHEREAS Dr. John Yarie has served the University of Alaska Fairbanks with distinction in teaching, research and public service from 1978 to 2017; and

WHEREAS Dr. Yarie expertly taught many forestry and natural resource management courses on topics including natural resources measurements, silviculture, forest ecology, geographical information systems, and research methods; and mentored numerous master’s and doctoral students; and

WHEREAS Dr. Yarie conducted influential research on boreal forest ecology and productivity, particularly examining effects of drought and fire; and has been a strong and tireless advocate for responsible and sustainable forest management in Alaska; and

WHEREAS Dr. Yarie served in important professional and public service roles, including Director of the Forest Soils Laboratory, Department Chair and Chair of the regional section of the Society of American Foresters;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks expresses its deep appreciation to Dr. John Yarie for his extensive contributions to the State of Alaska and to the University; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks, in further recognition of the invaluable services rendered by Dr. Yarie and as evidence of the University’s desire that his identification with the University be maintained, hereby salutes the appointment of Dr. John Yarie as Professor of Silviculture, Emeritus; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution be appropriately engrossed and signed by the Chancellor of the University of Alaska Fairbanks as further evidence of the esteem and respect in which he holds Dr. John Yarie, and conveyed to Dr. Yarie on this 6th day of May, 2017.
