DR. MARY KESKINEN

Associate Professor of Geology, Emeritus

WHEREAS Dr. Mary Keskinen has served the University of Alaska Fairbanks with distinction in teaching, research and public service from 1984 to 2016; and

WHEREAS Dr. Keskinen was the first woman hired into a tenure track position by the University of Alaska Fairbanks Department of Geology and Geophysics, and has served as a role model for women students and faculty as they have increasingly populated the geosciences; and

WHEREAS Dr. Keskinen was a mainstay in delivering the undergraduate and graduate geology curricula, teaching courses in igneous and metamorphic petrology, optical mineralogy, physical geology, mineralogy, and petrographic analysis; and

WHEREAS Dr. Keskinen conducted research on topics including tectonics and petrology in Alaska and California, and the application of petrology and geochemistry to geothermal exploration and development; and served in important professional and public service roles, including serving as a panelist for the Ford Foundation minority scholarship and fellowship program;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks expresses its deep appreciation to Dr. Mary Keskinen for her extensive contributions to the State of Alaska and to the University; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks, in further recognition of the invaluable services rendered by Dr. Keskinen and as evidence of the University’s desire that her identification with the University be maintained, hereby salutes the appointment of Dr. Mary Keskinen as Associate Professor of Geology, Emeritus; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution be appropriately engrossed and signed by the Chancellor of the University of Alaska Fairbanks as further evidence of the esteem and respect in which he holds Dr. Mary Keskinen, and conveyed to Dr. Keskinen on this 6th day of May, 2017.
