MS. KATHLEEN WYNNE

Professor of Marine Biology, Emeritus

WHEREAS Ms. Kathleen Wynne served the University of Alaska Fairbanks with distinction in teaching, research and public service from 1988 to 2015; and

WHEREAS Ms. Wynne advised fourteen marine biology and fisheries graduate students to master’s degrees; and

WHEREAS Ms. Wynne is an outstanding researcher who has conducted wide-ranging studies of marine mammal populations and their interactions with fisheries and other human activities, and studies of the trophic interactions of marine mammals; and

WHEREAS Ms. Wynne authored three widely used field guides, Guide to the Marine Mammals of Alaska; Guide to the Marine Mammals and Turtles of the U.S. Atlantic & Gulf of Mexico, which won the 2000 National Outdoor Book Award; and Guide to the Marine Mammals and Turtles of the U.S. Pacific, which won the 2015 National Outdoor Book Award; and

WHEREAS Ms. Wynne has made extensive contributions to public service, including serving in the NMFS Marine Mammal Stranding Network in Alaska and New England; serving as a member of the NMFS Alaska Scientific Review Group; and working closely with marine resource users and managers to help resolve practical problems in marine mammal interactions with fisheries;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks expresses its deep appreciation to Ms. Kathleen Wynne for her extensive contributions to the State of Alaska and to the University; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks, in further recognition of the invaluable services rendered by Ms. Wynne and as evidence of the University’s desire that her identification with the University be maintained, hereby salutes the appointment of Ms. Kathleen Wynne as Professor of Marine Biology, Emeritus; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution be appropriately engrossed and signed by the Chancellor of the University of Alaska Fairbanks as further evidence of the esteem and respect in which he holds Ms. Kathleen Wynne, and conveyed to Ms. Wynne on this 8th day of May, 2016.
