Mr. Richard D. Seifert
Professor of Engineering Extension, Emeritus
Mr. Richard D. Seifert served the University of Alaska Fairbanks with distinction in teaching, research and public service from 1973 to 2010.
He helped educate thousands of Alaskans about safe and efficient home-building practices through his many public lectures and workshops; and developed and taught courses designed for the general public and for the professional development of colleagues in his and related fields; and exemplified the qualities of the Extension professional's belief in the power of individuals to learn and to apply that learning to the betterment of their own lives.
Mr. Seifert codified his extensive knowledge of home construction in the North in the publication of an array of books, articles, manuals and web-based materials, all of them intended either to assist homeowners or to increase the knowledge of experts; and frequently updated and amended many of those publications to reflect new technologies and techniques.
He energetically contributed much of his time to a variety of organizations, both related to the University and outside it, ranging from faculty committees and student-led efforts to community organizations; and who is remarked upon for his enthusiasm and earnestness in translating technical material so that it can be used by all Alaskans to improve the quality and safety of their homes and communities.
