Dr. Thomas P. Clausen

Professor of Chemistry, Emeritus

Dr. Thomas P. Clausen has served the University of Alaska Fairbanks with distinction in teaching, research and public service from 1982 to 2011.

He has steadfastly maintained high pedagogical standards for nearly thirty years, using innovative classroom and laboratory techniques to motivate his students at the undergraduate and graduate levels to understand the complexities of organic chemistry, for which he earned high marks from his students as well as the Emil Usibelli Distinguished Teaching Award.

Dr. Clausen's research on the chemical interactions between plants and animals has earned him the admiration of his peers; and whose work has helped identify mechanisms of plant defense against herbivory by Alaska mammals and the important role these interactions play in the ecology of high-latitude forests; and has through publication of nearly sixty scientific papers shared his expertise with a wider audience.

He served the University as Chair of his department, tirelessly championing strong teaching and academic programs; and as director of the Alaska Native Science and Engineering Program played a key role in fostering interest and success in science among Alaska Native students; and has further served the University as a member of numerous department, college and universitywide committees.

The University of Alaska Fairbanks expresses its deep appreciation to Dr. Thomas P. Clausen for his extensive contributions to both the State of Alaska and the University.
