Dr. John J. Kelley
Professor of Marine Science, Emeritus
Dr. John J. Kelley has served the University of Alaska Fairbanks with distinction in teaching, research and public service from 1969 to 2010.
He has dedicated much of his career to the education and mentoring of students at all academic levels; and has offered further guidance to many master’s degree and doctoral students through his service on their graduate committees; and helped develop a program to encourage Alaska Native undergraduate students to pursue careers in science, math and engineering; and whose teaching innovations include the pursuit of online marine science education projects.
He has authored or co-authored nearly one hundred fifty publications, proceedings and technical reports; and has been deeply involved in research and policy matters of particular interest to Alaska and the North, notably as Chair of the North Slope Science Advisory Committee for nearly thirty years.
He has applied both his scientific expertise and his leadership skills to a variety of public service venues at the Department and University levels as well as to national and international organizations and institutions; and was duly presented with the Emil Usibelli Distinguished Service Award in recognition of his work.
