Dr. William D. Hibler III
Research Professor of Sea Ice Physics, Emeritus
Dr. William D. Hibler III has served the University of Alaska Fairbanks with distinction in teaching, research and public service from 1999 to 2009.
He has, through his example and encouragement of scientific rigor, mentored scores of students as they advanced to research careers; and has motivated and influenced a new generation of geophysical scientists of the highest caliber who are now engaged with significant and influential research programs of their own.
He is one of the world’s pre-eminent sea ice scientists; and who has conducted pioneering research in the fields of ice dynamics modeling and observation which continues both to guide and challenge the international research community; and whose willingness to express honest and open opinions has furthered scientific growth in his field.
Dr. Hibler, as one of the original faculty members at the International Arctic Research Center, played a key role in engaging the scientists who provide the Center’s intellectual substance and worldwide credibility; and whose service on search and promotion committees has helped shape the Center and related departments into a world-renowned research institution.
