Dr. Mark A. Box
Professor of English, Emeritus
Dr. Mark A. Box has served the University of Alaska Fairbanks with distinction in teaching, research and public service from 1990 to 2010.
He has guided with grace and equanimity his students’ inquiry into human understanding through careful study and consideration of literature and philosophy such that they reject sophistry and illusion for principled and rigorous thinking; and has been thrice rewarded for his classroom endeavors with the College of Liberal Arts Excellence in Teaching Award.
He has focused his research efforts on the eighteenth-century philosopher David Hume, and has become a leading authority on him; and whose book on Hume is highly regarded by scholars throughout the world, and has been quoted or cited in an impressive array of publications centered on Hume; and who has made further contributions to divers studies in religion, aesthetics and language in the seventeenth- and eighteenth-century context.
He has been a valued servant of his profession and the University; and whose careful analysis and collegial temper have benefited a range of individuals and organizations throughout the Department of English, the College of Liberal Arts, and the University; and has applied his intellect both formally and informally to editing or reviewing papers, articles and other scholarly works.
