Requirements for B. A. Degree in Communication

  1. Complete the general University requirements and B.A. degree requirements, including one of the two Fundamentals of Oral Communication courses required in the Core Curriculum.

  2. Complete the following requirements for the major:
    (All courses listed below are 3 credits each)
    COMM 180 - Introduction to Human Communication
    COMM 330 - Intercultural Communication
    COMM 351 - Gender Communication
    COMM 401 - Communication Research Methods
    COMM 425W - Communication Theory
    COMM 482WO - Seminar in Communication

  3. Complete 12 additional credits, selected from the courses below, all of which must be at the 300 or 400 level.

    300 Level**

    COMM 300x - Communicating Ethics*
    COMM 320 - Communication and Language
    COMM 321W - Nonverbal Communication (W)
    COMM 322W - Interpersonal Communication (W)
    COMM 331O - Advanced Group Communication (O)
    COMM 335O - Organizational Communication (O)
    COMM 352 - Family Communication

    400 level*

    COMM 441 - Persuasion
    COMM 462W - Communication in Health Contexts (W)
    COMM 475W - Applied Communication in Training & Development

  4. Minimum credits required.......................120

* If taken to meet the upper division Baccalaureate CORE requirement for Ethics/Value & Choices in the Perspecitives in the Human Condition, then the student must take an additional 300 or 400 level Communication course to complete the major (12 additional elective credits).
** With approval of advisor, an appropriate level special topics or independent studies course in Communication may be used to meet this requirement.

Requirements for Minor in Communication

A minor in Communication requires the completion of 15 credits in Communication courses beyond the course taken to satisfy the university oral communication requirement. These 15 credits must include COMM 180, COMM 330 or COMM 351, in addition to 9 elective Communication credits at the 300 level or higher. Courses designated as Social Science or Humanities that are taken for the minor may also be used to fulfill Social Science and/or Humanities distribution requirements for the B.A. Degree.
