About the Alaska Statewide High School Science Symposium

Letter from the Director:

The Alaska Statewide High School Science Symposium (ASHSSS) is a hands-on/minds-on research, writing and oral intensive opportunity for you as secondary high school students of grades 9-12.

The ASHSSS is a University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) and College of Natural Science and Mathematics (CNSM) outreach program in support and celebration of secondary students conducting original research in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). Usually this research is done with the guidance of a mentor, but normally performed outside normal classroom settings.
Over 150 volunteers annually make this program happen for you.  Many local, state and national businesses, firms, agencies and the U.S. Army, Navy and Air Force, in addition to UAF and CNSM with their commitment to excellence and outreach, contribute to insure that the ASHSSS takes place each year.
Students who complete experimental research projects write a formal scientific paper based on their research and submit their paper with their application to the ASHSSS. Submitted papers are reviewed and edited by scientists and returned. Students whose papers are accepted for competition then present the results of their work orally at the symposium in a manner similar to that of a scientist presenting their work at a conference of their peers.
Student researchers who present their work at the symposium may also enroll in CHEM 190P, a two-credit UAF course.  They compete further for cash awards, scholarships, and the opportunity to advance to the National Junior Science and Humanities Symposium (NJSHS).  If successful there, they go on to compete in the London International Forum. All expenses are paid for these two events.
Now in its 30th year of serving young people in the State of Alaska, I challenge you to take full advantage of all that our program offers. Contact us for further information on how you can partcipate.

Yours in Science,

Abel Bult-Ito
