Alaska Teacher Certification

Step 1: Complete Required Praxis I & II Exams

Complete the Praxis I and Praxis II Exams. Both the Praxis I (general knowledge required for all teachers) and the Praxis II (Subject Area Tests to achieve "Highly Qualified" status) are offered through UAF Chukchi as well as other sites around Alaska.

To take the Praxis I or II, you must register online here: http://www.ets.org/praxis/register.

IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT PRAXIS I

The state of Alaska recognizes several exams that meet the Praxis I requirement. This list is available through the Alaska Department of Education & Early Development in their list of Approved Alaska " Basic Competency Examinations".

Step 2: Complete an Approved Alaska Studies Class

If you graduated from a college or university outside Alaska and hold an Alaska "Initial" certification, you need to take an Approved Alaska Studies class. Classes not on this specific list do not count toward the professional certification requirements. This class must be completed before the expiration of your initial certification.

Step 3: Complete an Approved Multicultural Studies Class

If you graduated from a college or university outside Alaska and hold an Alaska "Initial" certification, you need to take an Approved Multicultural Studies class. Classes not on this specific list do not count toward the professional certification requirements. This class must be completed before the expiration of your initial certification.
