The University of Alaska Fairbanks Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry offers programs leading to an American Chemical Society accredited B.S. degree in Chemistry. The curriculum of the chemistry degree offers four program options — chemistry, biochemistry/molecular biology, environmental chemistry and forensic chemistry. The Department also offers programs of study leading to M.A. and M.S. degrees in Chemistry, M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Environmental Chemistry and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology as well as a Neuroscience Option. Faculty members within the department are associated with the Institute of Arctic Biology, the Geophysical Institute, the International Arctic Research Center and the College of Rural and Community Development. The department is centrally housed in a modern building that opened in 1995 and contains laboratories, classrooms, and offices.

» American Chemical Society's National Chemistry Week will be celebrated at UAF's Reichardt Building on Saturday Oct. 25 from 1-3 PM. Featured will be displays and hands-on demonstrations related to chemistry and biochemistry research in the department. Information for prospective college science students, their parents, and high school science teachers will be available. Come and meet your future chem prof! See some of the tools of modern chemistry research in action!
» Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry Lectureships for the Fall 2008 semester are held by Dr. Anne M. Chaka of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and Dr. Kristin K. Koretke of GlaxoSmithKline Inc. Dr. Chaka will present a seminar on Tues. Dec. 2, 4-5 PM in 201 Reichardt. Dr. Koretke visited UAF on Oct. 6-7. Lecturers also visit general chemistry classes to discuss modern applications of chemistry and career opportunities in chemistry.

» UAF has been awarded a grant from the National Science Foundation to enhance undergraduate research mentoring. PI Tom Clausen and co-PI Marvin Schulte are planning the implementation now.  Find out more about possible scholarships that this program may provide for under-represented minority students pursuing studies in Biochemistry/Molecular Biology and Biological Sciences.
