How To Install the LiveWeb PowerPoint Plug-In for Showing Rotatable Molecules in a PowerPoint Slide

John Keller September 2005

1. Right-click the following link, and do Save Target As  "something.zip",  preferably in the C:\Temp folder. Liveweb.zip

2. Using Windows Explorer, double-click the  something.zip   filename; Extract files to C:\Temp.

3. Move the LiveWeb.ppa file created in the extraction process to the C:\Documents and Settings\fsyourname\Application Data\Microsoft\AddIns folder.

4. Open PowerPoint. Under Tools, Macro, Security set level to "Medium".

5. With PowerPoint still open, do Tools, Add-Ins, Add New. Highlight the LiveWeb.ppa file, and click Add. It should be added with checkmark in the box.

To show a rotatable molecule on a PowerPoint slide, you must first create a web page with a working Chime script. That is, you need a "something.html" file, and the subject molecular structure file ("something.pdb"), preferably stored in the same folder as your .ppt file. Make sure you have done File, Save in PowerPoint before continuing.

Then in PowerPoint, do Insert, Web Pages..., enter the name of the html file ("something.html" or whatever), enter the size of the box that will hold the image, then OK. A slide will be created with a white box over a colored object. I just deleted the white box. You can resize and/or move the colored box (which is a placeholder for the Chime image). When you run Slide Show, you should see the molecule. Example .pdb, .html, and .ppt files are included here. Right-click and do Save Target As to your local hard drive (C:\Temp). You can just modify the html file to fit any molecule you want. You may wish to first open your .pdb file in RasMol and try out different formating commands.

Example files    Hemin.pdb       Hemin.html         LiveWebTest.ppt
