Background A knowledge of transition metal chemistry is vital for understanding catalysis, materials chemistry, and biological chemistry. Students in the Howard Group synthesize new compounds and work out mechanistic details for interesting reactions. This work typically involves using a vacuum line, Schlenk techniques, and an inert atmosphere glovebox. New compounds are characterized by multi-nuclear magnetic resonance, infrared, ultraviolet-visible absorption, and mass spectroscopies, in addition to cyclic voltammetry, elemental analysis, and single crystal X-ray diffraction. |
