Objectives:

  1. Know monosaccharide structure [aldose vs. ketose; stereochemistry (D and L based on configuration of pentultimate C; epimerization if referring to configuration around other C's), open chain and ring formations (cyclic hemiacetal and cyclic hemiketal); a and b configuration on anomeric C.
  2. Know oligosaccharide structure and function and how structure relates to function for cellulose, starch, glycogen, glycosaminoglycans and proteoglycans ("matrix proteins").
  3. Be familiar with structure of glycoproteins and the role of glycoproteins in cell surface recognition.
