Lecture #2: The Molecular Revolution: Nucleotides and Nucleic Acids

Read:

Optional:

HW

Objectives:

  1. Know the structure of DNA and the evidence that led to the discovery of the structure of DNA.
  2. Know how RNA differs from DNA in terms of structure and function.
  3. Describe how the structure of DNA is necessary for its two functions (replication and direction of protein synthesis).
  4. Know that a gene directs the synthesis of one protein.
  5. Describe the process of transcription and translation (Best yet review of transcription and translation! DNA workshop activity)
  6. Given a sequence of deoxynucleotides be able to transcribe them into mRNA and translate the mRNA into protein.
