How to use Medline (found on PubMed)
Goto the following URL: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/PubMed/
In the upper left hand corner select:
for original research papers.
Protein for information on protein function and sequence of amino acids.
Nucleotide for mRNA and gene (DNA) sequences.
Structure for 3-D protein structure (In Chem Dept computer lab, select RasMol on viewer to see structure).
Genome to see where the gene is found in various species.
- OMIM
: Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man. This database is a catalog of human genes and genetic disorders authored and edited by Dr. Victor A. McKusick and his colleagues at Johns Hopkins and elsewhere, and developed for the World Wide Web by NCBI, the National Center for Biotechnology Information. The database contains textual information and references. It also contains copious links to MEDLINE and sequence records in the Entrez system, and links to additional related resources at NCBI and elsewhere.
After you have selected the database you wish to use, type in key words you wish to search for. Note that AND, or OR need to be in capital letters.

Goto the following URL: http://newfirstsearch.oclc.org/FSIP
- Type in your key words.
- Where you see In: Scroll down past topics to databases. Highlight ReadersGuideAbs
Readers Guide to Abstracts contains abstracts to popular periodicals including Science, Nature as well as Ladies Home Journal etc. It is a good place to start to see what topics are generating the most interest in the news. Once key aspects of the topic are identified you may want to look further on Medline.
