ANNOUNCEMENTS

11-6-09 YouTube! Video of the thermite reaction (Friday 10-23-09) has been posted on YouTube by student Josh Dunn. Follow the link on the left panel.
11-4-09 Hour Exam 3 covering chapters 5, 6, 7 will be given next Wednesday, Nov. 11. A practice exam of the same format and approximate coverage may be obtained by following the link at the left. A key will follow later.
10-26-09 The "grade estimation spreadsheet" is now available in two formats. (People, you don't need MS Office to open this spreadsheet: Mac Office opens it directly, or if you don't have that, download and install the FREE OpenOffice for Macs or PCs.)
10-25-09 Grades for Hour Exam 2 have been uploaded to Blackboard. 5 pts were added to certain exams allowing for either answer C or D (question 5, exam A) or A or D (question 2, Exam B). The correct answers are D and A respectively, however the solubility tables in the text and OWL, and JK's slides, are perhaps ambiguous due to the borderline solubility of some of these compounds.
10-20-09 Graded Hour Exam 2 papers will be returned in class Friday. A link to the key for the hand-written questions 17 and 18 is available on the left panel.
10-14-09 Hour Exam 2 on Ch 3 & 4 will be Monday, Oct. 19. A practice exam my be downloaded by clicking the link on the left. This is very similar in coverage and style to this actual exam. A practice exam key will be posted later this week. Please make sure you have a non-programmable, non-graphics scientific calculator for this exam. Please also bring your Polar Express card.
10-9-09 Six-week grades (A-F, W) have been posted on UAOnline. The grades are based on the same % cutoffs described in the syllabus out of 700 pts. To arrive at the total (1) your first hour exam score was multiplied by 4, (2) for clickers, the percent of 22 or a number down to a minimum of 14 (in other words forgiving up to 7 zeros), (3) for OWL, the percent of 196 pts (raw score is shown on Blackboard), and (4) the percent score on the first lab report. This weighting is the same as described in the syllabus for the whole semester. Several students still have no lab scores reported, or handed in. The percent of 600 points was taken in these cases.
If you feel that an oversight has occurred in calculating your grade, contact or see JK. These grades are advisory only. The final grade is based on the total number of points accrued at the end of the semester, and nothing else.
9-23-09 Solutions to some of the practice exam questions 1-20 are provided.
9-22-09 The practice exam key was posted. This will be discussed in class Wed.
9-20-09. Hour Exam 1 on Ch 1, 2 and Math Review will be Fri., Sept 25 in class. A practice exam may be downloaded by clicking the link on the left. This is very similar in coverage and style to this actual exam. A practice exam key will be posted later this week. Please make sure you have a non-programmable, non-graphics scientific calculator for this exam. Please also bring your Polar Express card.
9-14-09 Hallway clicker-testing station. The display case in the first floor main hallway outside 194 Reichardt is a laptop with a continuously running TurningPoint clicker slide with a Response table showing. If you click, and your clicker is registered by the date and time shown on the slide, your box should light up. If not, see JK. (To activate the slide, and temporarily stop the screensaver, press the RED BUTTON at the bottom right of the glass case.)
Wed. 9-9-09   OWL homework due Thursday 9-10-09 has been postponed until Monday 9-14-09. This will hopefully accommodate those students who have experienced delays in obtaining their OWL cards.
Chem 105X Lab - Re Labor Day Sept 7. No classes at UAF this Monday. If your lab is scheduled for Monday, please attend a Chem 105 lab on Tuesday or Wed in order to take the pre-test.

Register your clicker online on OWL website

The clicker ID number is on the BACK: Anything that looks like an "Oh" is actually a "zero". If you type in the wrong number, your clicker will not be registered.

Clickers should be set on channel 41. That is the default channel of a new clicker. However, if you have carried it around in your purse or pocket, the channel may have changed. Or, if you have a used clicker, it may have been set on another channel. Resetting the channel is easy. Press GO-4-1-GO (but not too fast). Otherwise, leave the GO button alone!  If it the clicker light shows green and registers on the Response Table in class, its correct. If it flashes yellow and red, its the wrong channel.  If it shows green but does not activate a box in the table on screen, it is not registered, or the incorrect serial # has been entered in the database. If there is no light, the batteries are dead - get new ones.
